"I kept waiting on pins and needles because it all felt too good to last. I waited for Evan to show up. Or Kian to give up."
*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.*
After reading this book I still have a purple haze of lust clouding my vision. Because of Kian was a gem of a book I was not expecting. Kian is perfect book boyfriend material; thoughtful, caring, protective and a deviant in bed. What more could a girl ask for? From the synopsis I thought this was going to be a dark read, I assumed Brynn craved the darkness but I couldn't have been more wrong. She did crave something but Kian taught her what she wanted wasn't wrong and he was more than capable to satisfy her urges.
Brynn moves to a new town to start over, she has an ugly past she wants to leave behind in the form of an ex-boyfriend called Evan. With only one true friend, Sage, Brynn keeps her social circles small. That doesn't stop her attracting the attention of Kian. He can't explain it but without even interacting with Brynn he feels protective of her and starts to look out for her welfare-in a totally non creepy way of course and his actions pay off when he is in the right place at the right time.
Brynn and Kian form a friendship in spite of them both being ridiculously attracted to each other, more from Brynn's instance than Kian's. Brynn believes she's messed up inside, she wants things she shouldn't and she fears she will taint Kian. Kian is attuned to Brynn and he knows what she needs without her even asking. I loved this element of the story. I didn't expect it and thought it was written very well. It wasn't introduced for the sake of it. I loved how it tied in emotionally and how therapeutic it was for Brynn.
"Brynn, nobody's as together as they seem. Everyone has skeletons in their closet and monsters under their bed."
This was my first book by Sibylla Matilde and I have discovered a great new author. My highlighter was getting a good work out. I loved her writing style, I found myself smirking, laughing, crying and anxious over the span of one chapter. I was caught up in the characters and really hoped for the best outcome.
"Please. . ." she quietly sobbed. "Love me . . ." Fuck, like she had to ask me to, I had for so long already."
The dual point of view worked well. It was important to witness the story through Kian's eyes as well. It was great to discover his intentions were good and he really did care for Brynn. Although the plot wasn't original and I could predict the events before they happened, the characters and the writing set it apart from books of the same theme. I read this book in a matter of hours, the % was increasing so quickly; a true sign that I was enjoying it.
Let's talk about sex shall we? Hot. Scorching. Molten. Just some of the words that come to mind when thinking about Kian. He liked to take control and he gave Brynn what she needed when she needed it. I wouldn't class this book as BDSM, if that tag is attached to it and it's not your thing, I don't want it to put you off. Yes there is some exploring of a certain nature but it's incorporated well into the story. Because of Kian is a contemporary romance with a little kink to it. It's not hardcore erotica, so I urge all romance fans to read it.
"He told me I was breathtaking. He told me I was brave. He told me I was his. "Yes," I breathed back at him as my eyes drifted closed. Because I was."
"I thought she was even more gorgeous than before. Every time she made my fingertips ache to touch her. She made my heart ache to love her."
"I felt my balls tighten up, and I fought the release. I wanted to paint her white, to shoot off all over her breasts and watch it mix with the raindrops. But I wanted inside her more." *phew! fans self.*
What I liked most about this book was Kian's ability to stay strong and dependable throughout the story. More often than not we read about broken men waiting for that strong girl to save them. The roles were reversed here. Brynn had convinced herself that she was the damaged one that would cause more harm than good and Kian was there to prove again and again that she was not and that she was indeed worthy of him. He was just so dreamy. *sigh*
"You scare me," she said with a quiet whisper. "Why?" "Because I'm not good enough for you."
"You're mine, Brynn. I'm not going to bail on you because you have this fucked up notion that I'm better off without you." He kissed my lips sweetly and wrapped me in his strong arms. "I'm not giving up on you."
I got more than I bargained for with this book, I fell in love with Kian, I was all for his bedroom hobby and I was pleased to see the growth in Brynn's character from beginning to end. I loved Sage as a supporting character and would love to see her get a story of her own. The epilogue didn't take us too far into the future so I can only hope we get to see more of Kian and Brynn again someday.
"This bond was so incredibly powerful, so amazing and life-altering. Every time I touched her, I felt like our souls were connecting, melding together."
Because of Kian is a sexy, well written contemporary romance and one I urge you to buy today. Trust me; with this book in one hand and a grape popsicle in the other, you will not be disappointed. ;-)
“Kian Tierney. K-I-A-N. It’s my name.”
Remember that name because Kian is HOT! I knew when I read In the Firelight that Sibylla could bring the steam, and with Because of Kian she did not disappoint! This man is not only hot, he’s also so sweet and kind of hero-ish which I’m a total sucker for.
This is a story of how a woman named Brynn Ashton picked herself back up after being torn down by a horrible man. Kian knows who Brynn is, and when he sees her in desperate need of help he can’t help but swoop in and be her hero. And he does it so well too! The only problem is that Brynn is so scared and hurt by her past that she can’t see what’s right in front of her. She has a real problem trusting people and even though she’s slowly letting her guard down around Kian, she still can’t seem to let go 100%.
Kian decides to help Brynn gain her confidence back by enlisting some interesting techniques. The attraction they have towards each other is completely obvious, but they don’t act on this right away. Kian is very aware of Brynn’s leniency and doesn’t take advantage of her ever. It’s almost as if he knows exactly what she needs before she even knows. And this is why Kian is so dreamy, it’s as if he was made for Brynn to protect her and heal her.
“I’m doing this because I want you. Now. I want to get lost in you, to feel you inside me again.”
I really enjoy Sibylla’s writing, it is very fluid and strong and her humorous side comes across as well. There is a very important element in Brynn’s healing that I believe was done beautifully. To see how her characters were able to be there for each other and how Brynn was finally able to let go and fully trust Kian was awesome, not to mention super hot! I am also a new fan of the flavor grape ;)
“Every time she made my fingertips ache to touch her. She made my heart ache to love her.”
What I Love is that there are some BDSM elements included in this book, but it definitely didn’t take over the story at all. In fact it was completely necessary to the story. It wasn’t put in there for the lust factor, it was put in very specifically to help the growth of the characters. Specifically Brynn, and I LOVED that. Don’t get me wrong, it’s seriously hot and completely lust worthy! It was written just right and Kian is a great Alpha for sure!!
“I love how you think and react. I love how you respond to me. And I really love how you fight me because it gives me the excuse to go all alpha and fuck you silly.”
“I’ll fight for you, even if it means fighting you for you.”

Sibylla Matilde grew up in the mountain valleys of Southwest Montana exploring the dusty Old West gold country on the back of a horse. She attended a two-room schoolhouse beginning in 1st grade & had the same teacher until she changed schools after 7th. Beginning at about age 12, Sibylla discovered historical romance, feeding off of work of Jude Deveraux & Lisa Kleypas. She loves a book that can make the reader run the gamut of emotions, from the sweet glow of new love to gut-wrenching heartache. She is a true romantic & always has stories floating around in her head, living in a fantasyland until she writes them down to free them.
Music is her emotional trigger. Growing up with a Wagnarian-loving mother, Sibylla was raised to treasure music that digs deep into the psyche, drawing out elation, sorrow, grief, desire. The soundtrack to her life includes many genres spanning centuries. She looooooooves Thirty Seconds to Mars (rather obsessively, actually... but, really, how can you NOT be crazy about this guy!? Jared Leto. Shhh. ) & pimps them out to all her friends through Spotify. She also delights in Met Opera HD broadcasts at her local movie theater & hopes (listening Met?) to someday see Diana Damrau reprise her role as Mozart’s Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte.
Sibylla lives with her husband and hero who saved her from her own calamitous, young-adult self. He makes her laugh daily, even when things are tough. He's proved to her that love really can heal a shattered soul. In 18 years, they have never had a fight, although argue regularly with their two teenage kids who have, unfortunately, inherited their father’s quick wit (unfortunate as it is a quick wit that Sibylla, herself, definitely does not possess – there is a reason she is a writer & not a stand-up comedian). They live a quiet life with their two weird little rescued Chiweenies. Wait… teenagers & little yap-dogs? OK, maybe not so quiet.
