I always look forward to starting a J.B. Hartnett book I just love the way she makes me feel during and after reading one. Bride in Bloom is the first in the Beachy Bride series and after reading the first page I just knew I was going to love it and I did.
Bride in Bloom tells the story of Victoria and Cameron Muir two people who have suffered heartache, but both whom still want to believe in love. It is very much a story about second chance love, real love, letting go of the past, moving forward, never giving up, and taking a chance on love again.
“When you know, you know. And when you’ve lost everything you thought was real, you recognise real when you see it you just have to trust it”
Victoria was a sweetheart and I was feeling for her as she discovers all that she felt was true was not. I admired the way she handles things after she found out the truth. Cameron Muir wow did I love him. He sexy, a little bit of an alpha, he was attentive, enduring, and considerate, and knows how to woo a lady. I just love that he doesn't just tell Victoria with his word how he feels about her, he shows her with his actions.
“I’m a man who, when he loves. Doesn’t do it half-assed. Why hold back with the people you love? We aren’t here for very long, so I figure we need to make the most of it”
“He doesn’t say much but he’s talking to you Tori…. These little things the gifts, the notes … They are huge
I loved the storyline. It was romantic, charming, funny, and flirty. There were a little angst and drama but not too much. Oh, and let not forget how hot and steamy it was at times. Love the hot sexy scenes. The only frustrating thing for me whilst reading this book was that sleep, and work got in the way, and therefore I couldn’t read it in one sitting.
“I’m worth the risk. You need to believe in it with me. You’re worth the risk”
There were some great realistic secondary characters that added to the story. Loved Cameron’s family, especially his mum, she made me laugh so many times. I can’t wait to read their stories in the rest of the series. My mind is going in overdrive working out whom the next book and the future books in the series will be about. I have my theories, and I can wait to see if there are right.
Oh, and the other thing I loved and made me very happy was its connection to J.B’s Leaves series. That series has a special place in my heart, and I think that’s what made me fall in love with this book even more. Even though, all the characters weren't in the story. I loved that they were somewhere in the background just hovering the thought of those characters being so close just made me smile.
Overall, I loved this one, it has a different feel from her other books, but still brilliant read. J.B Hartnett is an amazing writer, who knows how to write a great romance story that make you feel with great characters. I love her writing style always so descriptive, and I felt I was there at Laguna Beach watching it all unfold. I loved being on Victoria and Cameron heartfelt journey. I didn’t even mind that there wasn’t an epilogue, which is usually as must for me, as I know there will be more Victoria and Cameron in the rest of the series.
“I think we both know that with us, there’s a beginning and a middle, but there will never be an end.”
Bride in Bloom was one of those books that made me happy, swooning and grinning from ear to ear!! A must read for all you romantics out there.
When we first meet Cameron, he's nursing a broken heart, and drowning his sorrows in beer. His mother, who I absolutely adored, is doing her best to light a fire under him, and get him on the path to being himself again. His mom is kind of amazing. She's no-nonsense, without losing her compassion. She's wise and nurturing, as all moms should be, but she has an awesome sense of humor. She won me over right away. I was only through about 3% of the book and I was already hoping to see a lot more of her. She makes sure Cameron knows that this isn't the end of the world for him. The rest of his family is equally as charming. Cameron humors their attempts to bring some levity to his situation, but his heart has been torn to shreds and he's just trying to make it through the day. My heart went out to the poor guy. But his family helped give him hope that he would find love again.
"You'll know, Cameron. You'll know because even with everything you've been through, you'll take one look at her and be willing to take that chance. She'll be a princess and she won't even know it."
Despite whatever time passed in between when Cameron's relationship ended and he made the decision to go after Victoria, it still felt slightly rushed. I was happy that the story was moving along quickly, so that's a plus, but I was lacking a connection to the characters in the beginning-- at least the strong connection that I wanted. However, as the story progressed, I was really rooting for Cameron and Victoria, both separately, and as a couple. They really did deserve their happily-ever-afters after everything they had been through. Tori deserved her dream dress, Cameron deserved the wife and family of his dreams. These two characters really grew on me!
The supporting characters were extremely endearing and I really loved that "something special" that they brought to the story. Their interactions and relationships with each other seemed genuine and authentic. Both main characters had a great support system in their friends and family!
"Take it," she demanded, making a circle gesture with her hands like she was about to cast a spell or something.
"Take what?" The flamingo?"
"No, you idiot. Everything he gives. Take it, savor it, feel every infinitesimal ounce you can drain out of it."
While I absolutely loved some interactions between characters, some dialogue came off a big "young," at times. There were times when this didn't bother me as much (I don't mind fluffy, romantic stories!), and times when it was a little hard to ignore. Having Cameron use words like fairy princess and dick in the same sentence threw me off a bit, as well as his choice of words when describing a particular body part of Victoria's. This happened just enough to distract me from the story occasionally, and that's one reason why I couldn't give Bride in Bloom a higher rating.
Despite the occasional dialogue issue (and it is MY issue-- it might not bother some readers!), I did really enjoy reading Tori and Cameron's story. It was very well written and paced nicely. It was a pretty quick read for me. The characters were all likable and the romance was sugary sweet. If you love a good second chance romance like I do, you should definitely pick this one up. I'm looking forward to reading much more from this author. I think I'm even going to catch up on her other series!
“Remind me to change my panties,” Dee stage whispered to Kath. When he was off the phone, the petite Dee with her dark brown hair and big blue eyes looked at Cam and said, “I will pay you every dollar in my bank account to talk that way to me.”
He jerked his head toward her. “Excuse me?”
“Your voice is like hot fudge dripping off the end of a spoon.” He did have a terrific voice.
“It’s the beard,” I said to my friends. “It makes me want to just climb up onto his face and take a ride on the man-mane. Did I just say that out loud?”
She has always enjoyed writing and at one time thought she could be a singer songwriter...the 'writer' part is the one that stuck.
Julie is obsessed with pi...the equation(and the food). She's allergic to cats and cantaloupe and hates mushrooms...so if you ever want to give her a gift, those are out for sure. She currently lives with her own romance hero husband and two boys in Melbourne, Australia.
