One of my favorite books of 2013 was There is No Light in Darkness by Claire Contreras. So when I heard she was writing a book apart from that series, I knew I had to read it. I had high expectations for this book and by the time I finished it, I thought it was just as good as TiNLiD. As soon as I read the prologue, I wanted to know more!
Brooklyn owns a very successful business and comes from a wealthy family. To many, this means that she has it all; they're wrong. She is the daughter of a former successful model that criticizes her appearance at any chance she gets and a the founder of one of the most well-known record label in the world, but most of the time she feels that whatever she does, it's still not good enough. Then there's Shea. I wanted to hate him, I think I times I did, since he introduced her at the age of sixteen to a world full of drugs, alcohol, and sex. But then I realized that he's just as lost as Brooklyn. He is not only Brooklyn's ex-lover, but also that one person that after the her best friend's tragedy, is there when she most needs him and he is that one person that always understands her. She's been though hell and back, and has stumbled a few times throughout her twenty-five years, but she has learned to get up, dust herself, and keep on walking.
And then there's Nick. Oh Nick. When I first met him, I thought: "Here we go again. I bet he's some bad boy with a mysterious past that will make you feel bad for him." I think it was the faux-hawk and the tattoos. But, boy, was I wrong! This guy made me swoon throughout this book and I was not expecting to love him as much as I did. He was not only sinfully sexy, but he was such a gentleman and so sweet. He was there for Brooklyn through when she most needed it. The connection between these two was obvious right from the very first moment the locked eyes with each other and it was hot! And every time he opened his mouth, he even made my heart skip a beat. Of course, he did have one a--hole moment and I was angry at him for a while, but then he redeemed himself.
Claire throws us a few twists along the way that either shocked me or broke my heart and almost had me in tears. This book had it all: some angst thrown in there, a mild triangle (which was not really a "triangle" per se; you'll see what I mean), lots of angst, sexy and a few wtf! moments (like the last 20% or so, which also had me in tears!).
My only problem was that I found myself getting bored at times. Mostly when I was in Brooklyn's head and she had these long thoughts that sometimes did not have much to do with the situation she was in.
There are a few secondary characters in this book like her cousin Nina and her brother Hendrix, that I would love to see them have their own stories told. We also get to see some past scenes involving a young Brooklyn and her best friend that will break your heart.
I really liked Catch Me. It was a great story and I am hoping that Claire writes some of the secondary character's stories. I will be definitely be reading more by her and truly recommend that you give this book a chance and read it.
"I can't see the boy that found me. I can only see the one I failed. The one that's gone. He's gone... and so am I."
" I read somewhere that by the age of twenty-five, women are more sure of themselves, more comfortable in their own skin. Sometimes I want to find the person that wrote that and stab her in the eye with a rusty fork."
"You weren't meant to be more to me," I say, my voice wavering. "But that doesn't mean you haven't been enough."
"Are you sure that everything is going to be okay?" "No babe, I'm not, but that's the beauty of life. The only thing I'm sure about is us."
Claire Contreras graduated with her BA in Psychology from Florida International University. She lives in Miami, Florida with her husband, two little boys, and three dogs.
Her favorite past times are: daydreaming, writing, and reading.
She has been described as a random, sarcastic, crazy girl with no filter.
Life is short, and it’s more bitter than sweet, so she tries to smile as often as her face allows. She enjoys stories with happy endings, because life is full of way too many unhappy ones or ones that will scare the daylights out of her and have her looking over her shoulder at every turn. Like I said, she's very random.
