Behind her Eyes by A.L. Jackson
Behind Her Eyes by Al Jackson is Misha’s story the first story in When We Met anthology about four friends. Misha, Indy, Courtney and Chloe, who share a house near their college campus.
Misha was left broken hearted and humiliated, by her ex-boyfriend who lived next door. Upset and devastated by what has happened she left vowing never to return. However, roommate Indy persuades her to return, and she does.
Misha meets Darryn her hot new neighbor who has now moved in next door. Misha is attracted to Darryn but with what has happened to her, she no trust when it comes to men, and after first impressions Darryn seems like a man not to be trusted.
“Never again would I allow myself to fall prey to a guy like that. Lesson learned- the heard way”
Darryn knows what happened to Misha, but he doesn’t let her know as after meeting her he soon realizes his theories about her are wrong, and he sees her insecurities, fears and embarrassment.
“I her to know she was beautiful and good and anyone who made feel anything less that that was nothing but a fool”
I felt for Misha after what she had been through, and there was some touching scene between Misha, and Darryn love that he was protective of her. Darryn wasn’t one to give up without a fight, and does what he can get her to trust him, and most of all, let him in, and to build up her confidence again.
”Then tell me what you’re ready for…anything I just want to mean something to you.”
Overall, I enjoyed this short story; it was sweet, heartwarming read, with likable characters, and even thought it was a novella I didn’t feel rushed. It had everything I like in a full story from Al Jackson just is a smaller dose.
Saving Me by Molly McAdams
Saving Me by Molly McAdams is Indy’s story the second story in When We Met anthology about four friends Misha, Indy, Courtney and Chloe, who share a house near their college campus.
Indy is suffering, suffering from a recent heartache, and suffering from guilt of something that happened in her past. To hide from the pain, she tries to lose herself in partying, drinking and sleeping around. It a pattern she is having a hard time breaking.
Kier the quiet guy whom next door who is always there to take care of her, after the parties at his house. Kier is also quietly suffering from guilt, he feels from because of something that happen in his past. It has changed the way he now acts and thinks and was one of the reasons he wants to save Indy, to save her herself every week. Even though he knows she will not remember in the morning when she sober.
”You know my name. You just don’t want to remember it right now.”
“I couldn’t stop the need I felt to go take care of her. Just like I’d always felt with her. From the beginning there’d been something about her, something calling me to her – to protect her”
When Indy meets Kier sober, she has this strong sense of déjà vu, and she wants to know why. Kier wants her to remember when she is ready and doesn’t push her. They start to get to know each other, and close friendship develops.
“None of it made sense. He didn’t make sense. But for the life of me, I wanted to make sense out of what was pulling me to him”
Overall, I enjoyed this novella. Love the way Kier took care of Indy, and I totally understood why when I discovered his secret. Loved that they were able to share their pain that they both had suffered. Although this one had all the making of being a full novel, I like that it was short and sweet, and low on the drama. All Molly fans will love it.
Fouling Out by Tiffany King
*I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.*
Fouling Out was a sweet New Adult novella. It’s about childhood friends drifting apart only to be reunited in college, but now they come from two different worlds. Dalton is a hotshot basketball player at the top of his game, although it’s more his father’s dream than his. When he runs into Courtney, he likes what he sees but is taken aback when she gives him the cold shoulder. Dalton realises has a lot of time to make up for.
Courtney has managed to avoid Dalton since she started college, but now that he has her in his sights there is no escaping him. At first Courtney puts up a good fight but then she discovers the boy she first loved during her childhood still lurks underneath. Courtney soon learns, there may have been more to their separation than what she first thought.
The writing, as always, was easy to read. It filled a quick hour and the message behind the story was a good one. Both Dalton and Courtney were evolving and they happened to reconnect at the right time. I wouldn’t say the story grabbed me and I’m unsure if it’s going to be part of a bigger story with Courtney and Dalton or if it was a complete novella. Their story is resolved at the end of Fouling Out and I’m happy to leave them there. For fans of New Adult, I’m sure you will enjoy this sweet read.
Beneath Your Layers by Christina Lee
I loved this novella. Christina Lee never fails to create interesting characters, and ones that I gravitate towards. For being a shorter story, I didn’t feel we missed out on any of the key points. In fact I thought we got just the right amount of romance, sexual tension, conflict and emotion.
Blake had to drop out of college and that’s when the rumours began. Blake is a hot topic of gossip as is his reason for not finishing school. Although it annoys him, he doesn’t let it bring him down, as those close to him know the real reason.
Chloe is one of the many that judges Blake and when she needs his help to finish her fashion project, she grudgingly has to accept it. During the time they spend together and with a few games of truth or dare, Chloe and Blake uncover the real people behind the gossip.
I liked both characters immediately. I felt for Blake and his situation, he was a good person and I’m glad Chloe gave him the chance to prove it. I loved the games of truth or dare they would play. It added the right amount of flirtation and vulnerability at the same time.
Chloe started out as quite an uptight character. She had a very demanding mother to please and therefore she didn’t let go of control easily. Blake was the one to loosen her up, and I approved of his methods. ;-)
“Close your eyes and stop thinking, goddamn it,” I said in a gruff voice. “Just feel. Don’t worry about later or tomorrow. This is just me and you. Just here and now.”
Behind Her Eyes was a great New Adult novella, it is packed with sexual tension and I was shouting at my kindle many times telling them to get it on already. Christina Lee’s writing is entertaining and engrossing and I recommend you buy this one today!

She first found a love for writing during her days as a young mother and college student. She filled the journals she carried with short stories and poems used as an emotional outlet for the difficulties and joys she found in day-to-day life.
Years later, she shared a short story she’d been working on with her two closest friends and, with their encouragement, this story became her first full length novel. A.L. now spends her days writing in Southern Arizona where she lives with her husband and three children. Her favorite pastime is spending time with the ones she loves.
