BlogTour - Every Second With You (No Regrets #2) by Lauren Blakely ~ Ava's Review and Double Giveaway!
"We all have to cope in different ways. Trey and I have learned to cope in our own ways growing up. Then we learned to heal, both alone and together, in our time. Our bodies, our hearts, our minds."
*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.*
I was nervous going into this one, as I worried what lay ahead for Trey and Harley. Luckily, for my fragile heart, it had less angst than I thought there would be and in its place was raw emotion, drama and revelations. This was the perfect conclusion to Trey and Harley's story. Answers were found, pasts were confronted, fears were abolished and most of all sweet, all encompassing love won out.
"I bet she's thinking of the night we met, when she walked into my tattoo shop, and straight into my heart. If she'd gone to any other shop in the city she might not be mine. But then, I bet fate always had her picked for me, and me for her."
There were a few times when my heart fell to the floor, Every Second With You picked up immediately after book one and Harley served Trey a curveball, his immediate reaction was to go back to that dark place of addiction, to shut down and be numb. I was gripping my kindle hard when he went to his old stomping ground and I was praying he didn't let himself or Harley down, he remained strong in one sense, only to come home and use Harley as his choice of drug. I was spitting mad at him, but at the same time that's all he knew, it was the only coping mechanism he had. What I loved most in that situation was Harley's strength, she could see right through him and she called him on it, he wasn't to use her like that. Thankfully Trey seen sense and got his head screwed back on.
"Harley is my whole fucking heart, and then some."
The drama was far from over and both Harley and Trey had to confront their families and their pasts. This was possible as they drew strength from each other. Harley accepted that her mother was never going to change and be the parent she needed and Trey confronted his parents and made them realise that life was still happening all around them and that hope could emerge from the darkness and eradicate the fear. I was glad Miranda-the blackmailer-got her comeuppance and it was great to see Harley reconnect with the family she missed growing up. Just as I thought things were balancing out, a face from Trey's past returned and I began to pout as I thought this could throw a spanner in the works but I was happily surprised and proven wrong once again.
"I trust him completely. I trust him with my whole entire heart."
The main event that was about to change Trey and Harley’s relationship could have been glossed over, they could have got a sickly sweet HEA but Ms. Blakely did the subject justice and injected realism into the story line. Trey and Harley struggled, they feared the unknown and they fell out but that’s what happens. It was due to their character growth that they were able to deal with the tough things and instead of hiding from each other; they exposed their fears and asked for help. I really thought Lauren did a great job with this.
"This isn't what I would have chosen for us. Now now at least. But it's our reality, and we have to deal with it."
Of course Trey remained as sexy as ever, that man was unbelievably hot and so sentimental, who knew?! The plane journey home has to be one of my favourite scenes to date. And as a side note, I think the cover models are the perfect vision for Trey and Harley. There was plenty of smexy scenes thrown in but for me they took a back seat, this story isn’t smut with dialogue thrown in, it was by far the opposite. Trey and Harley’s physical relationship complimented and personified their connection. Every Second With You was first and foremost about struggle, addiction and Trey and Harley finding their way through the dark. It was unbelievably good.
"She is my everything, and she will always be the love of my life, the love of my death, the love of my soul. I have loved her with no regrets, and I will continue to for the rest of my life, and even then some.
Even then some."
The last 15% of the story was so emotionally charged and my tears spilled easily, especially during Trey's point of view when he spoke about Harley and all that she meant to him. There was a split second where I thought Ms. Blakely might do the unthinkable and tear my heart out, thankfully she didn't. I couldn't have survived if Trey and Harley had come this far only to miss out on their future. This part of the storyline stirred up old fears for Trey that were never too far from his mind and my heart was aching for him. It was very well done and delicately written.
The No Regrets series is by far my favourite. Trey and Harley are two equally strong, yet equally vulnerable characters. Their journey was full of pain, fear, and sorrow but in the end, they had the one thing that pulled them through: Hope.
Once again, Lauren Blakely delivered a well-written, engrossing story. Before I started, I worried if the characters would suffer unnecessary angst but I should really learn to trust one of my favourite authors as rightfully so, their story was far from over and Every Second With You needed to be told and I loved, well every second of it really ;-)
"As the water lapped the shore, then rolled back out to sea, we were finally where we wanted to be: with family, by the ocean, under the sun, on our terms, loving fierce and true."
