Blog Tour - Enhanced Collector's Edition App: Poughkeepsie by Debra Anastasia ~ Ava's Review and Giveaway
*I received a copy of this app in exchange for an honest review.*
Umm wow!! What is this magical slice of reading heaven I have in my hands?
As I am reviewing the app for the iPad, I can't comment on the layout for the computer but in my opinion the iPad was the perfect platform to view this on. Each page contains a full chapter, it has a scrolling motion you use from top to bottom to read the entire chapter, and you swipe left or right to move between each chapter. From the very first page I was impressed imediately. I had skimmed the special features thinking I got the gist of it, I had no idea how much this app contained and I was in awe of all the extra treats we received.
This app takes reading to the next level. I think I probably loved this experience more as I had previously read Poughkeepsie and therefore I loved the characters and the world in which they lived. So, for me, it enhanced my experience, it brought my favourite characters to life.
Pictures accompany most chapters, this visual aid really helped to set the scene. And the music that is incorporated into the story, plays at the click of a button. I had assumed you would click on a link and it would take you to the iTunes store (more on that later) but for all the original music by Ron Pope, it is integrated into the book, I pressed play and listened to some of the most beautiful, soulful music whilst I read. This is my dream come true! I don't need to flip between my music app and my reader app as I read, it does it all for you. This feature alone had me mighty impressed.
The amount of extras crammed into this app is unreal, when describing it to my friends, I think I used the phrase 'it's so cool' about 100 times. I was awed by the features. It reminded me of the directors commentary on a dvd, we were privvy to the fun facts and little tidbits of information that added to the story for me. I got to know Debra Anastasia through this app, it was great to discover her thoughts, feelings, likes and dislikes. She shared her journey with us and it was great.
Fun facts were highlighted in red and when clicked on, a text box would appear with extra info, I loved this 'behind the scenes' look at Poughkeepsie.
Videos and sound effects were also incorporated into the app, this really impressed me, I didn't have to visualise Livia's train pulling away from the station, with one click of a button I could hear it.
As well as falling in love with Blake and Liv all over again, this app was bursting full of bonus material. The bonus scenes were marked in black and by click on these boxes it would take you to an extra scene or bonus content like recipes. It was easy to flip between the bonus content and the story. I loved reading about all the intimate moments and revelations I didn't get to witness in detail the first time around.
As I mentioned earlier, all original music is integrated into the app, it was great to listen to as I was reading certain chapters. For music by other artists that Debra paired with some scenes, the song title and artist was listed in red and by clicking on the link it would take you to the iTunes store, allowing you to listen to a sample or purchase. I am a big music lover, especially whilst reading books, it can bring each scene to life and I was really pleased music featured heavily in this book.
It doesn't take me much to get lost in a book, give me great characters, wonderful writing and an interesting plot and I can go off the radar for hours, with the enhanced collectors app from Debra Anastasia, it took me down the rabbit hole and into this amazing place. Blake, Beckett and Mouse all have a special place in my heart, I loved this story when I first read it in 2012, now after spending days in their world once more but on a much deeper level, these characters are all the more real to me (I don't care if I sound crazy, I love these boys!)
If you are discovering Poughkeepsie for the first time or if you are revisiting a book that you know and love, it is definitely worth spending the extra money on this app. A great investment to visit time and time again, learning something new each time you open it. I can believe this app was years in the making, it runs effortlessly for me as the reader, experiencing everything at the click of a button but I can appreciate the hard work and determination that went into it. Debra Anastasia has set the bar high and I don't see anyone eclipsing this app any time soon.
Debra Anastasia is busy, just like every other mom. There's dinner, the dogs, the kids, and their homework. The laundry pile turns into a big, heaping monster. When the clothes finally make it into the washer, it gets unbalanced and puts on an elaborate show before it cuts out. This crazy job that never ends is her first love and her crowning achievement.
Her writing started a decent handful of years ago when along with the dogs, cat, kids, and husband, the voices of characters started whispering stories in Debra's ear. Insomnia was the gateway for the plots that wouldn't give up, wouldn't let go. In the shower, a twist would take hold and--dripping and frenzied--she'd find somewhere, anywhere to write it down.
Debra grew up in New York and got a bachelor's degree in political science at SUNY New Paltz. At the start of her marriage, she moved to southern Maryland with her husband. She still doesn't trust crabs and all their legs, though everyone else in her family thinks they're delicious. Her favorite hobbies include knitting, painting furniture and wall murals, and slapping clowns.
Omnific Publishing published her debut novel, Crushed Seraphim, and the sequel to angel Emma's adventures, Bittersweet Seraphim. She's working on Return to Poughkeepsie right now to be released in late 2013. You can visit her website at DebraAnastasia.com and find her on twitter @Debra_Anastasia or Facebook.
