Blog Tour - Last Breath (Hitman #2) by Jessica Clare & Jen Frederick ~ Excerpt, Ava's 5 Star Review and Double Giveaway!
Regan . . .
I curl up on the mattress, hugging my legs to my chest and waiting. There will be another man soon enough, and then Freeze, so I enjoy the moment of silence while I can. My lip hurts, a bit puffy from where the last man hit me, and I touch it with my fingertips, wincing.
Then, I lay my head back against the wall, thinking. My mind is filled with the gun and the man I was forced to service, and my stomach roils uncomfortably again. I swallow hard and force myself to think of zombie movies, instead. E. I don’t know what movies begin with E. This one will require some thought. Maybe something with “Enemy” in the title.
I ponder this for minutes, staring at nothing, when there is a knock at the door again. I get to my feet automatically. God, I hope it’s not the man with the gun again. I don’t think I could stomach seeing him twice in one night.
But when the door opens, it’s not Freeze.
The man that steps in is unexpected. He’s accompanied by Senhor Gomes, the master, a man I have only seen once but hear about all the time. Gomes looked me over when I arrived and then left, as if I were an uninteresting piece of property.
The man with him is tall, good-looking, and wears a casual suit. He’s got nice brown hair, sharp eyes, and I can tell immediately from the cast of his features that he’s American.
What the fuck. Not again. Not another American jackass. It doesn’t matter if he’s American—he’s here to rape me like all the others before him. Except this time? I’ll know all the nasty, shitty words he yells into my ear.
And later, when he’s done with me and leaves, I’ll feel even dirtier because he’s only made things worse.
He looks me over, his gaze sliding to my star-spangled bikini, and I can’t help myself. “What’s the matter,” I ask, “international pussy not good enough for you?”
"In Daniel's arms I'm whole. In Daniel's arms, the world is safe."
*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.*
Move over Nick, there is a new hitman in town and his name is Daniel Hays *insert emoji with goo-goo love heart eyes here* I spent the whole day in my pjs reading Regan and Daniel's story, only pausing for refreshments to replenish my strength to reach the end. I wanted to read about Regan after her kidnapping in book one; I knew her journey wasn't going to be pretty and I was prepared for that. The book jumps straight into the horrible reality that is Regan's new life, my heart was aching for her and it devastated me to think this is reality for hundreds and thousands of women today.
Daniel is a mercenary who has been sent to retrieve Regan. He has a side agenda; he also wants to track down his sister that was kidnapped two years earlier. His plan was simple, get Regan, send her home and carry on finding Naomi. He didn't plan on keeping Regan by his side and he certainly didn't plan on falling for her but boy am I so glad he did!
Last Breath can be read as a standalone, there is enough recap and back-story for the reader to gain the full picture of Regan's current situation but there wasn't too much information that I felt the first book was rehashed. It was balanced well. For some reason I didn't click with Nick and Daisy in book one but I'm so glad that wasn't the case here. I loved both Daniel and Regan. Considering all that Regan had been through, it amazed me that her strength didn't falter, she was a fighter through and through.
"Live with the guilt," she spits out. "I don't absolve you."
Nick had me wrapped around his little finger I loved his character. I was swept up in the story and didn't care if it was right or wrong, I was willing Daniel to take out the bad guys and protect Regan no matter the cost. Daniel had many sides to him I loved. He was protective, strong and very loyal yet he could turn on the charm and showcase his playful, sexy side when need be.
"If we were alone in a dark corner of some bar back home, I'd back her right up to the wall and tell her that not only would she liked being owned by me, but she'd fucking beg for it."
Not to be forgotten that he was also a highly trained, dangerous assassin and this probably made me lust after him more than it should of. His confidence was sexy and the fact he protected Regan at all costs was endearing. Perhaps I should have found the action scenes more frightening than I did sexy. But every time Daniel took out the enemy I couldn't help but swoon.
"With a swift upward jerk of my knee, I introduce his balls and cock to his kidney.” Guess you won't be using that anymore."
What surprised me most about this book was the humour element, amidst the trafficking, pimps and murders I didn't expect this book to be funny. Many times I caught myself laughing out loud at the banter between Regan and Daniel, it worked well between them and balanced the seriousness of the dangerous situations they often found themselves in.
"Little more to the left, sweetheart. Though I have to say, your timing is terrible when it comes to foreplay"
Oh come on. Like I'd blow him in a gun fight."
"I lift her over my shoulder and squeeze one delectable ass cheek. "I'm losing all the blood to my head," she complains. "Not to worry. Soon it will be between your legs." This is a good position because she can't see my smug expression. "That's you Baby Boy." "I thought we'd agreed you'd call me Huge Dicked Daniel."
"Regan can be trusted. I won't have you saying shit about her, okay? She's a fighter, and she's with me. She's not leaving my side." God I love hearing him say those things. For that, he's totally getting a blowjob as soon as I get him alone."
I liked the setting of Rio for this book, as I was reading I could visualise the dirty run down 'favelas' or slums. Their environment was well described and I wanted nothing more for Daniel to grab Regan and run far away from the danger they were surrounded in. The pace of the story worked really well, I didn't want to put the book down and the action was plentiful.
When Daniel's sister Naomi was introduced I actually paused reading to search Goodreads for the next book in the series, I had my fingers crossed that it would be Naomi's story and I'm so glad that it is. I think that will make for an interesting read. I'm still not 100% sold on Vasily so I am intrigued as to whether I will get to see a different side to him.
Jessica and Jen's writing meshed nicely together, the words flowed well and I couldn't differentiate between the two styles, I thought they worked seamlessly as one. They created two great characters I couldn't help but love immediately. Not forgetting to mention the chemistry between Regan and Daniel, it slowly bubbled underneath the surface at the start. Regan was in no fit state to pursue any type of relationship but the interest was there and it was enough to build the anticipation between them. When things finally reached the next level it was hot!! Daniel and Regan shared many sexy times together and I had to fan myself a time or two. Those scenes were very well done indeed.
The storyline kept me guessing, I had no idea which way the story would go and even feared the worst at times. I was kept entertained to the very end. I liked that Daniel had the side plot regarding his sister. It brought depth to his character but it also added an element of intrigue to the story and I liked the way in which it all linked. I would have liked a little more exploration into Regan's state of mind. She had suffered the unimaginable and I did think perhaps she moved on a little too quickly but then there is no guessing what the ‘right thing’ in that situation is.
Last Breath was a great mix of action, mystery, suspense and hot chemistry. It makes a great change from the usual contemporary romance and will have you squirming on your seat one minute and then have you on the edge of it in anticipation the next. I recommend you check this one out for yourself today.
"As I cradle her in my lap I realise that the world could burn up and I wouldn't let her go. Not at this moment. Not until she doesn't need me any more because I can't remember the last time I felt this good. Maybe I never have."
"I'm coming back for you Regan. I won't leave you until you're safe. I promise."
"Because you're too important not to save."
"Sugar, you're allowed to feel any damn way you want." Just don't cry because your tears hurt worse than a knife wound to the gut."
"Daniel is totally and utterly safe. And I want him more than anything."
"You're mine Regan Porter. You don't get to decide if you die or not. Because if you do, you're destroying me too."
Book One . . .
I have been a contract killer since I was a boy. For years I savored the fear caused by my name, the trembling at the sight of my tattoos. The stars on my knees, the marks on my fingers, the dagger in my neck, all bespoke of danger. If you saw my eyes, it was the last vision you’d have. I have ever been the hunter, never the prey. With her, I am the mark and I am ready to lie down and let her capture me. Opening my small scarred heart to her brings out my enemies. I will carry out one last hit, but if they hurt her, I will bring the world down around their ears.
I’ve been sheltered from the outside world all my life. Homeschooled and farm-raised, I’m so naive that my best friend calls me Pollyanna. I like to believe the best in people. Nikolai is part of this new life, and he’s terrifying to me. Not because his eyes are cold or my friend warns me away from him, but because he’s the only man that has ever seen the real me beneath the awkwardness. With him, my heart is at risk..and also, my life.
