Release Day Launch - Three Broken Promises (Drew + Fable #3) by Monica Murphy ~ Excerpt, Derna's Review and Giveaway
“You’re going to turn me away yet again, aren’t you?” she asks when I don’t say anything. The irritation in her voice rings clear as her entire body goes tense. “I can’t believe it. I offer myself up to you with no strings attached and you’re trying to figure out how to let me down easy. God, I am such a moron.”
Unable to hold myself back, I rush toward her, angry that she would insult herself. Panicked that she really is going to walk away and I’m going to lose my chance. Thinking too much sucks. I need to just let it happen. Take this opportunity that she’s presenting me.
And let her go when our time is up.
“You’re not a moron,” I murmur, reaching for her. I cup her face in my hands and position her so she has no choice but to meet my gaze. I skim my thumbs across her cheeks, feel her shudder at my touch. “You make an offer like that and a man needs to process it first.”
The unshed tears still glimmer in her eyes and one escapes, leaving a damp trail across her skin. Leaning in, I stop its descent with my lips, tasting the salt, hearing the catch in her breath. “We do this and it’s not going to be some half-assed thing, you know,” I whisper.
She closes her eyes, her tears tangled in her long, thick lashes. “What’s it going to be, then?”
“A discovery.” I nuzzle her nose with my own, breathing in her scent, her very essence. God, I could devour her! It’s taking everything within me to keep calm and not unleash all over her. “An exploration.”
“That sounds like . . . research.” Her breath hitches in her throat when I drop a tender kiss on the tip of her nose.
Chuckling, I shake my head. “It’s the farthest thing from research.” I drift my lips across her cheek, blazing a hot path on her petal-soft skin. “You’re right when you said I don’t do commitment. The closest thing I’ve ever been to commitment is . . . what I share with you.”
She tentatively places her hands on my hips, her fingers curling into the waistband of my jeans. Having her hands on me sends little darts of fire throughout my insides, making me harden in an instant. She has no idea what sort of effect she has on me. How much restraint I’m using at this very moment not to throw her over my shoulder like an oversexed caveman and cart her off to my bedroom.
“But it can be no more than friendship with added . . . benefits.” I lift my head so I can look into her troubled gaze. She doesn’t like what I have to say and I don’t like it either, but I have to be honest. Stringing her along and making her believe this is something more is a mistake.
The two of us together would never work. I’m too damn selfish. I’d disappoint her. I’d hold her back when she needs her freedom. I’m not worthy of her. She’s everything sweet and good in my life, where there’s little sweet and good remaining.
I’ve kept her—and our relationship—as pure as possible even after all of these years. With the realization that she’s leaving me, that we’ll never be together again, I need to take my opportunities where I can.
Jen bites her lip and drops her gaze. “I can handle that.”
Her body language is more than telling me she doesn’t really want to handle that, but I can’t worry about it now.
I want her too damn much.
*I received an ARC via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.*
I was looking forward to reading Three Broken Promises, I wanted to know more about Jen Cade and Colin Wider, their history, and the relationship they had.
Colin and Jen have known each other since they were younger. Colin and Jen’s brother Danny were best friends but Danny died in Iraq. Both have had a hard time coping with it. Colin feels guilty over Danny’s death, Jen feels guilty about her past and the things she did after Danny’s death, they both have secrets, and are hurting, but all the secrets, the hurt, and guilt is holding them back from being honest with each other about their true feelings.
I liked Colin, I did have mixed feelings about him whilst reading Second Chance Boyfriend as for most of it I thought he was a creeper, so I was pleased that by the end of the book I discovered that he wasn't such a creeper after all. I liked what he wanted, and was trying to do for Jen, but sometimes his actions just made things worse.
I liked Jen, she was sweet, she had a rough time after Danny’s death, she had made some wrong choices, and was worried that her past would affect the future that she wanted with Colin. I liked that she wanted to be independent, but again like Coin some of her actions made thing worse.
I enjoyed the storyline, but it was frustrating also. Told from dual POV, it was about second chances, forgiveness, and redemption. There was plenty of angst, and my heart went out to Jen and Colin at times, but there were many times that I found myself shouting at my kindle as I just wanted to bang their heads together as they had such bad communication.
The Chemistry and passion was intense between Jen and Colin, and when they did get together, it definitely resulted in some very hot sexy steamy scenes. Monica Murphy certainly knows how to write good ones.
I liked that we were able to catch up with Fable and Drew as I have missed those two; it was good to see Owen also. I’m looking forward to reading his story In “Four Years Later"
Overall as frustrating as this book was to read at times, I did enjoy it, but I will say I did like the first two books better. I like Monica’s writing style and I liked how it ended for Jen and Colin. I was at first disappoint that there was no epilogue, but I know that Monica isn’t finished with Fable and Drew and with the "Drew and Fable Forever" novella coming out in January I’m sure we will get a little more Jen and Colin in there too.
“She means the world to me and I keep on letting her go. Keep on pretending what’s happening between us isn’t real. All for her sake, I tell myself. I don’t want to hurt her. Bullshit. More like I don’t want to hurt myself”
“So scary, but the only time I feel safe, the only time I feel like I’m home, is when I’m with Colin.”
“Having Jen means I need to open myself up to her completely. The thought of that is scary. What if she doesn’t like what she sees? What if I disappoint her? It could happen”
"I'm not sure you can handle my secrets. But despite them, I want you, Colin. All of your faults and your strengths, the good and the bad. It doesn't matter. I want it all."
"If you don't want Jen to leave, then you need to find those balls you're so afraid I'm going to demolish, man up, and tell her how you feel." ~ Drew
“It’s easier to pretend she’s only my friend rather than admit I want more. The idea of her rejection scares the hell out of me”
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Monica Murphy is a native Californian who lives in the foothills below Yosemite. A wife and mother of three, she writes New Adult and contemporary romance for Bantam and Avon. She is the author of One Week Girlfriend and Second Chance Boyfriend.

We have something a little bit different on Biblio Belles, we always love to share the latest book news, sales and blog tours but today we delve beyond the books and talk to the owner of one of the biggest PR firms in the book world. KP Simmon tells us a little about her company and then you can enter to win a book from a selection of the awesome authors InkSlinger PR represents!

Shanyn Day - Publicist
Nazarea Andrews - Blog Tour Specialist
Jessica Collins - Executive Assistant
Hi Kelly thanks so much for stopping by Biblio Belles today!
Now we see your logo and the author’s you represent everywhere (including the best seller lists repeatedly) but can you tell us in your own words what Inkslinger PR does and what you can offer authors?
It’s simple- InkSlinger PR exists to help authors get the word out about themselves and their titles. We value the importance of storytelling and those who tell those stories. That’s what we’re about and that won’t change. Every author and their journey is different and so how we work with them is different too.
There are a lot of PR firms up and coming and some already established, in your own opinion what makes Inkslinger stand out?
I think what makes us stand out is experience and the fact that we try to be author services heavy. It’s very important for us to have a relationship with our clients and understand their goals and desires for each of their titles and their careers. I don’t know that there are things they can’t get anywhere else, but I think it’s how we do things. We’re heavy on author services as a whole and we try to focus on our authors with their long term careers in mind. We work closely with their agents, editors and any teams they have in place-whether they are on the traditional or indie side (or both) of the publishing world.
If authors were interested in working with you how would they get in touch?
If they are interested in working with us, they can email us at InkSlingerPR@gmail.com.
When you started Inkslinger by yourself did you ever think it would grow so quickly that you needed to hire a team, which you now have?
Well, I had dreamed it would grow and have a team. I had put down a 3 and 5 year business plan that included a team. It’s just gone a little faster than I had planned.
What role do the other girls play in Inkslinger?
Jessica E. and Shanyn are both publicists. They each have their own list of clients that they work with. Nazarea is our blog tour specialist. She handles all of the events for clients who do not work with us full-time but on a release or event basis. Jessica C. is my assistant and pretty much keeps me in line-or at least tries to.
Now to be in this business loving books is essential of course, what is your favourite genre you love to read?
Oh goodness…this question is always so hard for me to answer. I love way too many and my kindle and the 800 trillion bookcases in my house prove that. The truth of the matter is that I like to read authors who are storytellers and aren’t afraid to take chances. I think you can tell just from our client list that romance is obviously a genre we enjoy at InkSlinger PR. I think sometimes people think that’s all we do, but the reality is we focus on Young Adult, New Adult and Adult commercial fiction across all genres. Personally, I am a young adult fantasy/paranormal junkie. It’s one of my favorites. I have one or two guilty pleasure reads a month and the rest of my reading is usually my client’s upcoming titles or potential clients’ work. We read every author we work with before working with them. Because of that reading schedule, one or two guilty pleasure reads is usually all I can fit in, and it’s a good thing my clients are some of my favorite authors! Because of it, sometimes their books are my guilty pleasure reads too! Often, those guilty pleasure reads are in the young adult category.
Can you name one book that made an impact on your life or holds a special place in your heart?
GATHERING BLUE and the entire Giver Series by Lois Lowry. I read that series when I was younger and thought I want to do that. I want to write stories that make points in an accessible way and change people. I want to entertain and change. Obviously, I’m not writing these books and doing it in that way. But I do feel like I am getting to have a similar impact by doing what I do every day.
We can imagine how amazing an author feels when they receive news that their book just topped a bestselling list, but for you as their publicist how does that feel, seeing them achieve success?
I wish there were words to adequately describe it, but I haven’t found them yet honestly. I’ve tried several times and usually what happens is I end up a bit weepy and breathless. It’s actually not a very pretty sight. But I can tell you there is nothing like it in the world.
How does it feel walking into a book store and seeing your author’s books sitting on shelves side by side?
Fulfilling. I love seeing people have their dreams come true, and I know that is truly a dream come true for many of my authors. The first time I saw one of my author’s books in a bookstore, I stood there and cried in the aisle. People looked at me like I was crazy of course. The other day I went in to my town’s B&N and saw 12 of my clients’ books on the shelves. I kept taking pictures of them with my phone and tweeting it out. I’m sure it was annoying to my Twitter feed. I also got weepy standing in the romance aisle that day. This older woman looked over and said, “Oh, honey, you have the sniffles too?” I started laughing through my tears and introduced her to some new authors. LOL
We have loved working with Inkslinger PR over the last year, whenever an email pops in we are like kids in a candy store, you have the best events going on! Are you attending any upcoming signings? We would love to meet the hard working boss of this awesome organisation!
Oh thank you! We work with some of the most amazing clients ever. Honestly, without them, we are nothing. We have great events because they write great books and trust us to walk part of their journey with them.
As far as signings, I actually need to sit down with my calendar and nail some of it down. I do know that I’ll be at the Book Ball in LA at the end of February, the Austin Book Fest in March, RT, BEA, and UtopYA for sure.
Thanks so much for answering our questions :-)
Thank you for having me!! We love getting to work with you so much!

Book #2 Needle's Kiss Series
(Conflicted Love is book #2 in the Needle's Kiss series and should be read AFTER Tattered Love to fully grasp the story.)
Trip’s life motto is simple: get in, get off, get out. His lifestyle works for him, that is until he finds himself in an unexpected situation with the one girl he can't seem to get out of his mind.
Teeny has been strong for too long. One amazing crazy night, with her best friend's cocky colleague, leaves her with more than just unwanted feelings and cravings she just can’t seem to quench.
She's knocked up.
He's freaked out.
Life is about to get crazy for two people who can't stand to be close, yet can't seem to pull apart. Tension and confusion turn into mood swings and midnight snacks. How can things ever go back to simple times when every direction leads to chaos?
I threw my leg over my bike and started for her. The streetlight out front was busted, causing the place to be darker than normal. There was just enough light that as I walked behind her, I could see her sexy little ass encased in those prissy jeans she always wore. I caught up to her at the bottom of the stairs and reached out to grab her arm before she made it any further. Next thing I knew, Teen spun, her fist flying right into my nose; at the same time, she drove her knee up into my groin, dropping me like a sack of shit to the ground.
“F*ckkkkkkkk” I moaned, cupping my junk, rolling up onto my knees, and trying to get my breath back. Pain shot up into my stomach with each attempt.
“Oh, it’s just you.” Teeny breathed hard. I looked up at her through narrowed eyes.
“Oh, it’s just…F*ck, Princess. What the hell’d you do that for?” I wheezed.
“Well, you deserved it. You don’t sneak up behind a chick and expect not to get hit. Now, get up, dipshit. You’re making a scene,” she hissed, looking around the complex.

I was thrilled when I was offered a graduate teaching position at the prestigious Tennerson Girls Academy. At twenty-three, this would be my first ‘real’ teaching assignment. Working at the elite boarding school, home to the daughters of some of the wealthiest people in the world, was a great opportunity that I would’ve been stupid to pass up.
One week into my new job, and I suddenly had no idea why I chose high school…I was a seventeen year old boy once, I knew how teenage girls behaved.
You can’t even imagine the hell of trying to teach thirty, hormonal driven seventeen year olds who have been cooped up, away from any male contact.
I could handle the whispers every time I entered the room. I could even handle the obvious attempts at gaining my attention. What I couldn’t handle was her…
Rich bitches and way too many rules. Was it any wonder that I hated school?
Add to that the lack of male contact, and I was going insane. Like literally. I wasn’t used to this. A year ago I was normal. I had a boyfriend, friends and a loving family. There is nothing normal about me anymore, and nobody here lets me forget that.
My name is Wrenn, and I’m only here because my aunt took me in after what happened, but my aunt also happens to be the headmistress of this academy…Can you see my problem?
I’m hated for my lack of money, and I’m hated for who my Aunt is.
Then he arrived. Dalton Reed. My new history teacher.
Slowly, he helped me see that even in the worst situations, there is always hope.

You can say that I'm a little obsessed with teacher/student romance. I love that little thrill of having to hide the relationship and having to put everything on the line to be with the person they love. Always You was a slow-building, sweet romance about two very alike individuals falling in love
After the year she's had, the last place Wrenn wants to be is at the all-girls boarding school surrounded by spoiled teenage girls. She's acts very mature and has a very clear plan of what she wants for her future. She doesn't act like the other girls do when she meets Dalton, even though she is attracted to him but thinks that there's no way he would feel the same for her AND he's also her teacher.
Dalton is fresh out of college and knows that it was not the best idea to teach at an all-girls school full of hormonal high school girls. I really liked him; he was sweet and caring and he cant hide the feelings that have started to grow for Wrenn. He has a life-changing decision to make that will either make or break any future he had hope to have with Wrenn.
I didn't feel that forbidden factor in this story, which is what I love about student/teacher romances. The age difference was not very big at all and even the time they had to wait to make their relationship public was not very long either. I did love the connection and interactions between Wrenn and Dalton. I loved that they started out as friends and then their relationship developed into something more. I really liked that the story was told from Wrenn's and Dalton's point of view. I loved the ending since it took me by surprise and felt realistic. There was no unnecessary angst that took away from the story, which I liked, but I stilll wanted some big drama-filled reveal.
Overall, this I liked this book. It was cute and sweet, and the ending surprised me. The student/teacher aspect was not as taboo, but I enjoyed it regardless.
"You can't choose who you fall in love with, all you can do is be damn thankful you've found someone who understands."
*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.*
Okay so student/teacher relationships are the books I secretly love to read. I don't know why as I fret the whole way through about the big exposure! But I have to say Always You was a sweet romance, there wasn't a huge age difference and it was all about the timing.
Wrenn is having to repeat her senior year after a devastating family tragedy, she doesn't fit in at school and her aunt being the head teacher doesn't help. When the supply teacher turns out to be hot 23yr old Dalton Reid, school for Wrenn just got bearable.
Dalton is like a fish out of water, he underestimated what teaching hormonal teenagers would be like. He gets to know Wrenn outside of school when visiting her aunt and from there a relationship forms. But Dalton is dealing with his own troubles and a huge decision will have a massive impact on not only his future but the possibility of having one with Wrenn.
I will say the teacher/student element wasn't as taboo or as strong as I have read in other books, I didn't really mind that, it was more how Wrenn and Dalton met and if their circumstances were different it would have been a college campus instead of a high school one. I did get a bit antsy around 56% as I was scared of them being discovered and as I liked both characters, I didn't want their bubble to burst.
The issue that Dalton had to deal is a rare one in books and I thought it was really well done, I liked the inclusion of this, even though it doesn't go into great depths it was just enough to raise awareness and it added something unique to the story, I actually preferred this to the student/teacher element as I really felt for Dalton and Wrenn and the decisions they would have to make. I also liked that the author didn't take the easy way out at the end, the results felt more realistic and I really felt for both characters.
This was my first book by Missy Johnson, I liked the dual point of views as both characters had a story to tell. At the beginning of their relationship I felt the writing skimmed the surface, we were told a lot of their feelings rather than shown. For me I wanted to delve a little deeper and really get to know both Wrenn and Dalton. They were professing feelings quite quickly and I would have liked a more solid foundation to believe in what they were feeling. With that being said I think fans will love this story as it really is charming and sweet!
Always you is a sweet, easy read and perfect for this time of year. It's more than just a student/teacher romance and you should check it out for yourself today.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review
Always You was a gripping story that goes past the student teacher taboo romance. I am a huge fan of student teacher romance. I love the angst, the emotion, everything attached. However I was surprised at how this story was so much more than that. It worked its way into my heart as a story I will never forget.
Wrenn is not your typical high school student. She is repeating her senior year of high school at Tennerson Girls Academy due to a tragic accident where she lost her mom, dad, and brother. She is now living with her aunt, Layna who is the headmistress of that school. Wrenn is emotionally numb in that she no longer allows herself to feel anything as she continues to struggle with the reality that her entire family is gone. She meets Dalton Reid when he’s introduced as her new history teacher. He is fresh out of college at 23 years old. The girls at Tennerson go crazy over this hot and young teacher. When Wrenn and Dalton meet, sparks fly and Dalton discovers Wrenn is far beyond her 18 years.
The pace of this story was slower than others, however I felt that this allowed us to truly fall for Wrenn and Dalton as well as connect to their love story.. Wrenn and Dalton bond over similarities in horror movies. Soon enough their innocent banter turns into flirting…and something more.
Wrenn and Dalton’s love story was beautiful and captivating. As I said before this goes so much more beyond the typical student teacher romance. This is no surface love. What Wrenn and Dalton have is deep rooted, all consuming love. Without realizing it, they remind each other what it is to love and live again. That life is precious and tomorrow is not promised to anyone. This story has such a deep message that to reveal it would not be fair to future readers.
While most of us readers hope for a HEA, this is not the one I expected. While there is an ending it gutted me. I was beside myself as I didn’t’ realize how much I connected to Wrenn and Dalton. I cannot say if the ending was happy or sad, but I will say that you will FEEL it. The message in this story is powerful and so meaningful. I recommend this story to anyone that believes in true love. Love conquers all.
When she's not writing, she can usually be found looking for something to read.
Wes put his chin on my shoulder. “What the hell is that?”
I put my phone down and turned to face him. “Nothing that concerns you.”
“Are you seriously sexting another guy while I’m in your bed?”
“What?” I raised an eyebrow. “No. Who the hell even says that word? That’s reserved for political scandals.”
“I’m saying it because you were dirty texting another guy while you had me in bed with you? Are you also sending pics of your boobs too?”
My mouth gaped open. “What the hell? Do you just think I’m some kind of slut?”
He groaned, propping up on his elbow. “No. I just know how guys think. If some dude is texting you at 1 AM it’s not because he wants to go out for tea and cookies. He wants sex.”
“And I’m sure you haven’t done that millions of times.”
“I’m not an animal, Val. I have a little bit more respect for women than that.”
“Says the guy who married a girl he just met in Vegas.”
He grunted, grabbing my phone and putting it on the table beside us. “I could have done a lot worse.” He placed a quick kiss on my cheek but let his lips hover just above it. “And I don’t regret it one bit.”
“I’m sure that’s not true,” I whispered, barely able to get the words out. Truth was, I was starting not to regret it either.
He pushed a strand of hair behind my ear before his lips trailed back to my cheek and then down my neck, his stubble tickling my sensitive skin. “There’s nowhere else I’d rather be right now than here with you in this bed. I could lay here forever underneath these fake stars.”
I sucked in a breath, unsure of what to say next. But the moment didn’t really need words either. He breathed into my neck as if he was inhaling all of me. Trying to make a memory of my scent.
Raised in Avon, Ohio, the duct tape capital of the world, Jenny began her writing career as a featured columnist for her hometown newspaper. After earning a degree in photojournalism from Kent State University, she vowed to never spend another winter in Ohio and moved to Los Angeles, where there is far too much sunshine.
Amid working as a grant writer for Sound Art, a non-profit that teaches music in inner-city neighborhoods, and raising two kids, Jenny decided to do something with all the snippets of stories she wrote during microeconomics and began writing for young adults. She likes her heroines smart and quirky, her heroes nice, and her kisses sweet. Her debut, THE ART OF FALLING, is coming from Bloomsbury Spark in Winter 2013.
Apart from writing, Jenny is still an avid photographer, loves music despite no discernable musical talent and reads the dictionary for fun. She lives near Los Angeles with her husband, son and daughter. The four of them are always looking for their adventure.

I was a fan of Nevaeh and Angel the first time around and I was glad to see they got a Christmas Novella.
For being around only 50 pages, a lot was packed into it. Nevaeh still had some trust issues to deal with and the impulse to run at the first sign of trouble was always there. Angel wanted nothing more than to provide Nevaeh with the security she needed and he made it his mission to make her aware their future was together no matter what.
Christmas Salvation had some drama, angst but most of all really sweet times. I was pleased to see Nevaeh found the courage to work through her troubles even though her first instinct was to run. We got to see Angel's family and get to know him a little better.
This was a quick, easy read and if you liked the first book then it's a nice little filler to continue their story. As I was reading I did get confused at some points as it wasn't always clear who was speaking and I would need to reread the dialogue and a few time it would be Angel's mum but I wasn't aware she was in the scene. That little niggle aside this was a really sweet novella for the holiday season.
