*I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.*
Every now and then, I like a bit of suspense mixed in with my romance to keep things fresh. The CIA angle in Mercy caught my eye and I wanted to read on.
Becca Ford is now on the run and going rogue since her last assignment blew up in her face, now she can’t trust anyone. Becca was used in a honey trap to expose Jarrett Holt’s criminal activities, trouble was, Becca broke the golden rule of undercover operations: don’t fall in love with your mark.
Being Invited into Jarrett’s personal circle, Becca lost her focus on the operation and she questioned Jarrett’s involvement, was he as bad as he was accused of? Damning evidence said otherwise, Jarrett was promptly arrested, and Becca’s operation was uncovered. Eight months on, Becca discovers the enemy may actually come from within and turning her back on the CIA, she returns to Jarrett for help, if he will give her the time of day, that is.
Becca burnt Jarrett and when she turns up asking for help, he can’t forget it was because of Becca he got screwed over. But Becca is in need of help to uncover the truth and Jarrett decides he may as well get something out of the bargain and he informs Becca that only sex and no love with be involved. Well that’s the plan anyway…
"If you want my help, I demand the words." His lips skimmed up her spine and the last of her defences crumbled. "I'm yours."
Mercy started strong and I was engrossed from the beginning. We were teased with the former events, about Becca’s original mission, her relationship with Jarrett and how that crumbled. At one point, I wished we could have experienced it first hand, as the storyline pulled me in. It was clear both Jarrett and Becca had genuine feelings for each other but they were hiding too many secrets and lies to build something real the first time around.
"A thought floated through her mind: he was right, she was his."
The mystery began as Becca tried to track down the culprit for dismantling her team and ordering their demise. Jarrett was still withholding information from Becca as her ex-leader was seeking harbour in Jarrett’s home also. This was a surprising addition to the story and I felt we actually got two love stories for the price of one. Elijah also came to Jarrett to seek shelter whilst he too figured out who wanted him dead. Jarrett’s head of security, Wade never expected to find a match with Elijah yet he did, if only their relationship wasn’t shrouded in secrecy.
Mercy was full of sex and for lovers of erotic romance that’s a great thing, for me, I felt it overshadowed the storyline at times and I wanted more action out with the bed sheets. The other thing that surprised me was the entire story took place within Jarrett’s club. Elijah and Becca carried out their research there and Jarrett conducted his business from the same place also. I felt the story was boxed in and when the truth came out, it was a little antic climatic as there was no action, or flight. Everything took place in the one building. For this story to reach the next level, I would have loved the depth that different environments could bring.
Mercy was my first title by HelenKay Dimon and I would read more of her work. The story was told in third person narrative, usually this isn’t a favourite of mine but HelenKay did a great job of it to give us Becca and Jarrett’s story but also Elijah’s and Wade’s too.
If you are a fan of sexy suspense novels then you must check this one out today.
HelenKay Dimon is a former divorce attorney turned full-time romance author. Odd transition, right? She has sold over thirty novels, novellas and shorts to numerous publishers, including Kensington, Harlequin and Penguin Berkley, Samhain and Carina Press. Her nationally bestselling and award-winning books have been showcased in numerous venues and her books have twice been named "Red-Hot Reads" and excerpted in Cosmopolitan magazine. But the best part of the job is never having to wear pantyhose.
