It’s been a while since I read my Last Rebecca Donovan book, and I was excited when her latest book 'What If' downloaded on my Kindle. I knew from the second I first read the synopsis of this book that I want to read it, and I glad that I did.
“There are so may times I think about a decision I’ve made and wonder, ‘What If I had done it differently? Who would I be? What would my life be like? What if…?”
I’m not going to say much about the storyline, as it’s one of those books where I recommend that like me, you go in blind, and knowing the synopsis so that all your emotions will be first hand, and you can really experience the story.
I will say that What If is an intriguing storyline about Friendship, second chances, love and most of all 'what ifs' While reading it over the last two days I couldn’t tell you how many times I have looked back at my life’s “what If’s.”
I loved the characters, especially Cal he was a sweetheart. It's told in the present and the past and from several POVs. I particularly liked the flashbacks to the past when Cal, Nicole, Richelle, and Rae were younger. I loved seeing how their friendships developed, how inseparable that all were during their childhood loved the bond, the connection that they share.
The storyline is not rushed, It’s a slow build, which may seem frustrating at first, but it allows you to see the different layers of the story, different pieces of the puzzle, and how it's all connected. And I must admit I didn’t want to read too fast as I didn’t want miss bits. I did have my theories; some were way off, but once figure it out, it didn’t take away my enjoyment of the story if anything it became much more emotional read.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. I’m such a big fan of second chance stories. What if was a touching and heart-warming read. I liked the concept of the story and the mystery aspect of it. Rebecca has a beautiful writing style, and she takes you on an emotional journey right until you swipe the last page.

From the moment I heard about What If, I just knew I needed to read it. The story seemed unique yet beautiful. Powerful and all consuming.. And it was.
“To watch you live is breathtaking. You live a life filled with possibilities. A life most people miss out on.”
Cal Logan cannot believe his eyes when he sees Nicole Bentley, his childhood crush, while he is away at college. She looks and sounds just like Nicole. But this girl, Nyelle Preston is not Nicole. She is the complete opposite. Even with this difference, Cal feels himself falling for Nyelle. He becomes enamored with her and the way she lives. Her mystery intrigues him. The more he is around Nyelle, the less he cares about wanting to know what happened to Nicole. Told in past and present. This brilliant story is not everything it seems. You think you know the story. You think you figured everything out. But when the past and present collide, lives are shattered. And every single character is affected by it.
So I know what you’re thinking three stars? Why three stars? First, this was a hard book for me to rate. The writing? Absolutely brilliant. Mesmerizing, consuming. Flawless. Rebecca Donovan? She’s a genius. The way this story is told is unlike anything I have ever read. She allows you to become immersed in the story and the lives of it’s characters. So again, why three stars? Because along the way, I felt disconnected to the characters. There is so much more to say about the plot, but that would be a disservice to the reader. You need to experience the writing. And this story.
I think this is a book everyone should read. To love reading is to appreciate this author’s style of writing. Her words are unlike anything you will ever read . They are powerful and breathtaking. Her words will challenge you as a reader. There are so many connections throughout this book. Everything happens for a reason. I am sure reading it again, knowing what I know, will change my entire experience of the book. And I love that about this story. There are secrets, lies, and nothing is what you think it is. While I did not connect to the characters, I believe this book is well worth the read if you are looking for a well written book that goes where other books are incapable of going.
