What would you do if everything you thought you knew about your relationship turned out to be a lie? If your boss made you dread going to work each morning, despite the fact that you enjoyed what you did? If you had a dream that you'd never followed because you were scared of change?
Ellie Baxter is a 26 year old Senior Editor in a Publishing firm, whose relationship is stagnant and she feels unfulfilled and underutilised in her career. Following a shocking discovery, her best friend convinces her to take a month out, to give her time to reassess her life. So she books a twenty-eight day retreat in a cute little boathouse, situated on an island, in the middle of a loch, in a remote part of Scotland. Her intention, to be as far away as humanly possible from any distractions.
The gorgeous caretaker of the island that she has escaped to however, instantly challenges that plan. Sexual sparks fly from the moment he picks her up from the airport. Yet while the mutual attraction is undeniable, he insists that nothing can ever happen between them, they can only be friends. As they spend more and more time together, is it a promise that he can keep? Can a man and a woman with sizzling chemistry really just be friends?
He wants to know Ellie's life story, but refuses to give away much about himself, not least where he disappears to for four hours every day. Ellie is intrigued by him, and becomes determined to break down his emotional walls, as well as tempt him into her bed. But when she finds out his secret, will she still want him?
31 Days of Summer, the conclusion, is due to be released on 26th December 2014.
*I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.*
31 Days of Winter tells the story of Ellie and Dan. Ellie has booked herself a month on a remote Scottish island after finding out her finance wasnât the man she thought him to be. Ellie has sworn off men and relationships but when she meets the tall, sexy Dan who will be her island help for the next four weeks, Ellie knows heâs going to be hard to resist.
Dan is secretive and mysterious. He has an instant attraction for Ellie but he forbids himself to act on it. He feels like he doesnât deserve someone like her and with skeletons in his closet, he tries to keep her at arms length. But with only Ellie for company on the island, thatâs easier said than done.
It took me a while to get into the story as a lot happened at the beginning; Ellie had her life implode in her face, she had issues with her job and then she arrived at the island. It wasnât until 25% that the book hit its stride and I got into the writing as well as island life along with Ellie. Dan was the sexy stranger she tried to resist but it was nice to see their relationship bloom into friendship, well when they werenât blowing hot and cold with each other that is.
Ellieâs character was naïve, and although that was frustrating at times, I suppose in order for the storyline to work it had to be that way. I just wished she was stronger at points, she did her best to stand up to Dan and not accept his behaviour but she was only human and who could blame her for giving in to that fine specimen.
Mercurial Dan got a little bit too much for me, I donât know about Ellie but I had whiplash just trying to keep up with his mood swings. I really wished we got more of his point of view. I would say his pov made up less than 20% of the book. Part of his secret was easy to work out early on, and the rest came later but in order for me to empathise with him or understand his character I needed inside his head more. He had the potential to be a swoon worthy book boyfriend, it was just a shame his moody side and ill treatment of Ellie outshone his tender and vulnerable side.
âShe brought out a strong desire in me to protect her, even though I knew if I let her get close to me Iâd ultimately hurt her.â
I did like the small island setting and each chapter covered a day in the story hence there were 31 of them. The layout worked well and as a reader, I got to experience Ellieâs entire trip with her. Ellieâs best friend Brooke added some much needed comic relief. I loved their friendship and Brooke had some great lines.
âWho bloody cares? The offers on the table, take it. Iâll fly up there, ski to the shore, ice skate across the lake and smack you over the head with a frozen fish I caught on the way if you donât go for it.â
I would have liked Danâs secrets to be revealed in this book; again I felt it would have helped me connect with him, or at least soften my opinion of him to make me want to read their conclusion.
The sex was in abundance so if you like a steamy read, 31 Days of Winter will not disappoint. There was a little hint towards the end of Danâs inclinations in the bedroom and I feel he hasnât shown Ellie his full potential yet!
If you like character driven stories with lots of angst and mystery then you need to check this one out.
