Twenty-four-year-old truck stop waitress and single mother Catherine Wright has simple goals: to give her five-year-old daughter a happy life and to never again be the talk of the town in Balsam, Pennsylvania (population three thousand outside of tourist season).
And then one foggy night, on a lonely road back from another failed date, Catherine saves a man’s life. It isn’t until after the police have arrived that Catherine realizes exactly who it is she has rescued: Brett Madden, hockey icon and media darling.
Catherine has already had her fifteen minutes of fame and the last thing she wants is to have her past dragged back into the spotlight, only this time on a national stage. So she hides her identity. It works. For a time.
But when she finds the man she saved standing on her doorstep, desperate to thank her, all that changes. There’s an immediate connection, and it’s more electric than the bond of two people who endured a traumatic event. It’s something neither of them expected. Something that Catherine isn’t sure she can handle; something she is afraid to trust.
Because how long can an extraordinary man like Brett be interested in an ordinary woman like Catherine...before the spark fades?
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
As someone who loves modern day fairy tale retellings, I was absolutely looking forward to reading this one. Tragedy brings Catherine in Brett’s life. She is the woman that saves him from losing his life but she expects nothing in return. Catherine is well known in the town because of her past. She is no stranger to heartache. So when she ends up saving a famous hockey player’s life, she wants that brave act to go unknown. But Brett can’t let it go. He needs to face the woman who saved his life. The woman who dragged him from a burning car. The person he owes his life to. Hesitant, yet understanding, Catherine agrees to meet him. What she doesn’t expect is the intensity between them. The fact that she can’t stop thinking of him. It’s scary yet exhilarating.
Until It Fades was a slow burn romance. Sweet and heartfelt, I found this to be a very light read. I wanted a bit more grit and intensity. I felt that the characters lacked chemistry, but the storyline was solid and so was the writing. I found some parts of the story to be very slow, while other parts it was much easier to fly through the pages. This could just be me. I always want my heart to be pounding when it comes to love stories, and this time around I found the characters to be quite forgettable. Nonetheless, I think if you are into super sweet romance stories, then this is the book for you.

My wrists burn.
Hours of trying to break free of the rope that binds my hands behind my back have left them raw, the rough cord scrubbing away my skin and cutting into my flesh. I’m sure I’ll have unsightly scars.
Not that it will matter when I’m dead.
I resigned myself to that reality around the time that I finally let go of my bladder. Now I simply lie here, in a pool of urine and vomit, my teeth numb from knocking with each bump in the road, my body frozen by the cold.
Trying to ignore the darkness as I fight against the panic that consumes me. I could suffocate from the anxiety alone.
He knows that.
Now he’s exploiting it. That must be what he does—he uncovers your secrets, your fears, your flaws—and he uses them against you. He did it to Celine.
And now he’s doing it to me.
That’s why I’m in a cramped trunk, my lungs working overtime against a limited supply of oxygen while my imagination runs wild with what may be waiting for me at the end of this ride.
My racing heart ready to explode.
The car hits an especially deep pothole, rattling my bones. I’ve been trapped in here for so long. Hours. Days. I have no idea. Long enough to run through every mistake that I made.
How I trusted him, how I fell for his charm, how I believed his lies. How I made it so easy for him to do this to me.
How Celine made it so easy for him, by letting him get close.
Before he killed her.
Just like he’s going to kill me.
