Nico Medina’s world is eleven miles away from mine. During the day, it’s a place where doors are open—where homes are lived in, and neighbors love. But when the sun sets, it becomes a place where young boys are afraid, where eyes watch from idling cars that hide in the shadows and wicked smoke flows from pipes.
West End is the kind of place that people survive. It buries them—one at a time, one way or another. And when Nico was a little boy, his mom always told him to run.
I’m Reagan Prescott—coach’s daughter, sister to the prodigal son, daughter in the perfect family.
Life on top.
My world is the ugly one. Private school politics and one of the best high school football programs in the country can break even the toughest souls. Our darkness plays out in whispers and rumors, and money and status trump all. I would know—I’ve watched it kill my family slowly, strangling us for years.
In our twisted world, a boy from West End is the only shining light.
I hated him before I needed him.
I fell for him fast.
I loved him when it was almost too late.
When two ugly worlds collide, even the strongest fall. But my world…it hasn’t met the boy from West End.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Nico Medina and Reagan Prescott are from two different worlds. Nico is from the wrong side of the tracks facing a world of adversity every step of the way, while Regan is from a world of power, privilege, and a higher social class. But as perfect as this life sounds, there is a darkness that lives there. Due to circumstance, their worlds collide. Football. This town breathes it. Lives it. But its in trouble. It finds its saving grace in Nico. But at what cost? Nico faces bullying, jealousy, and even racism. But through that, he persevered. He pushes harder. He fights. And Reagan believes in him. Believes in his heart. He knows what he is capable of. They end up falling, but their love is threatened. Challenged. But their love will steal your heart.
"I'm a part of Nico's story. And he's a part of mine. I believe in him. More than I've believed in anything, and the enormity of it makes my chest hurt."
Their love is bold. Profound. Life changing. The way Nico and Reagan love is earth shattering. Inspiring. They love so deeply. Loudly. Without abandon. Their love pushes boundaries. Overcomes obstacles. The Hard Count is an eye opening, thought provoking, and absolutely moving story of two people who’s love and admiration for each other changes everything. If you love sports romance, this is perfect for you. The author masterfully balances romance, some angst, and sports that truly engages the reader. This story is deep. It pulls on your heartstrings. It’s a story that will stay with me for a long time to come.
“Make me earn it,” he says, pausing again to take my top lip between both of his. “I’ll earn it. I’ll never stop trying to earn it… to earn you.”
The writing in this story left me speechless. I was captivated from the very first page. The author’s talent in writing is flawless in her very ability in tackling such a sensitive yet important topic today. The Hard Count is a testament to hope, to change, and most of all, a testament to love. The author truly shines in this novel as she weaves her readers through a story that is so relevant today. So relatable. I held on to every single word of the story. For the words held so much power. I was emotionally invested in this story. It gave me CHILLS. The sheer beauty of not only the story, but its’ characters will astound you. We need more books like this. Ones that push you. Challenge you. Reminds you of all the ugly in the world, while remembering how even in the dark times, there is light. Thank you to this author for writing this beautiful, heartfelt, resonating story. Nico has my heart forever.
