Title: Punk 57
From New York Times Bestselling Author, Penelope Douglas, comes the latest New Adult romance of love, hate, and everything in between...
"We were perfect together. Until we met."
I can’t help but smile at the lyrics in her letter. She misses me.
In fifth grade, my teacher set us up with pen pals from a different school. Thinking I was a girl, with a name like Misha, the other teacher paired me up with her student, Ryen. My teacher, believing Ryen was a boy like me, agreed.
It didn’t take long for us to figure out the mistake. And in no time at all, we were arguing about everything. The best take-out pizza. Android vs. iPhone. Whether or not Eminem is the greatest rapper ever…
And that was the start. For the next seven years, it was us.
Her letters are always on black paper with silver writing. Sometimes there’s one a week or three in a day, but I need them. She’s the only one who keeps me on track, talks me down, and accepts everything I am.
We only had three rules. No social media, no phone numbers, no pictures. We had a good thing going. Why ruin it?
Until I run across a photo of a girl online. Name’s Ryen, loves Gallo’s pizza, and worships her iPhone. What are the chances?
F*ck it. I need to meet her.
I just don’t expect to hate what I find.
He hasn’t written in three months. Something’s wrong. Did he die? Get arrested? Knowing Misha, neither would be a stretch.
Without him around, I’m going crazy. I need to know someone is listening. It’s my own fault. I should’ve gotten his phone number or picture or something.
He could be gone forever.
Or right under my nose, and I wouldn’t even know it.
*Punk 57 is a stand alone New Adult romance. It is suitable for ages 18+.

The writing is so mysterious and it feels like an adventure while reading. You even get a sense of danger from the unknown. You know that feeling you get when you were a kid and playing hide and seek in a dark house and you try to control your breathing, and sit so still? You knew there was no real danger, but in the moment, you thought you might die? This is why I read Penelope Douglas books, her stories make you feel that way and her words suck you in so deep it's crazy. And she really has a knack for writing devious characters who are up to no good and know how to treat people badly, especially in the name of revenge. Punk 57 has a wonderfully eccentric plot with twist and turns at every corner and I found myself shifting uncomfortably many times because the angst!
The chemistry between Misha and Ryen is so electric and even volatile at times, but when their desires and vulnerabilities shine through it's the best thing ever and the tension that builds is never ending. Everything with Misha and Ryen is so innocent but also sensual and frenzied and beautiful. Misha is a musician and that is such a huge and beautiful part of this book and the beauty and pain behind all of it is consuming. I was completely invested in these characters, and I love the strength that they had as individuals trying to figure it all out.
The way the Author so meticulously wraps up the loose ends and unanswered questions in her stories is amazing. Not one stone is left unturned and she is such a great storyteller, I felt like I just binged watched one of my favorite series on Netflix. This book represents the Loss of innocence and gaining freedom by overcoming your own personal demons. It's ugly, and influential and beautiful, and nostalgic and cavernous and everything! I love the way the Author takes you to that fictional haunted house of the unknown, being slightly scared but you’re not sure why. That is the only way it makes sense in describable terms to me. Not all of it is necessarily scary, like at all, but it feels that way out of pure anxiousness. It's great! Oh, and there’s a major twist at the end that will have your jaw on the floor that I did not see coming at all. By the end of the book I felt exhausted but satisfied and I kind of wanted to do it all over again because I felt like I might have missed out on some of the intricacies that were laid out early on. Between the lyrics and the letters and the writing on the wall I was in awe, and I think that those inanimate objects were as much a character as Misha and Ryen were, and most definitely the heart and soul of this story. I loved it so much.
