I thought I’d left Blackwater, Texas behind for good. I didn’t belong in the small town, but my dad wouldn’t listen. He dragged me back home in his beat-up truck and dropped a bomb along the way: Chase Matthews was moving in with us. He was the golden boy of my high school, my former best friend, and the last person I wanted sleeping across the hall. His presence was too great a reminder of the ghosts I was trying to forget.
I didn’t ask for a hero. I don’t want to be saved.
To me, Lilah Calloway meant late nights sneakin’ out, moonlit hair, and sparklers in July. She was my best friend until the day she left and I’d assumed Blackwater had seen the last of her. Then, like a tempest, she rolled back into town for the final half of senior year. The chopped hair and dark devil-may-care attitude warned most people away, but I knew if I fought hard enough, I could find the lost girl.
I didn’t want to be her hero. Some girls don’t need to be saved.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
When I saw that R.S. Grey was coming out with a new book, I was excited! I love her writing. And then I heard this is supposed to be different. Much different than her others. While I love her rom-coms, I also like her feels. And this woman can write some feels. But I knew this would be a little edgier than her others. Darker. But my heart was ready. I needed this.
“Come back to me Lilah.”
Lilah Calloway is forced to return to Blackwater, Texas and she is not happy to be back in this small town. When her dad picks her up, she’s just shy of kicking and screaming when he also drops the bomb that her former best friend, Chase Matthews will be staying with them. Right across the hall from her room. There’s a history there. It’s dark. Painful. He embodies every reason why she left town and never wanted to come back. He is everything she tried to forget.
“..but when his lips met mine- that’s when he stole my breath.”
Chase never forgot about his Lilah. She has been his since they were kids. Even though she tries to physically change her appearance, she is still the girl he’s loved all of his life. Just a little lost. Beneath all the hurt, he can still see the person she’s always been. Chase tries to reach out to Lilah. But she doesn’t want to be bothered. She doesn’t want to be reminded of the strong bond they once had. Or still have. There is no denying the underlying thread that holds these two together. You feel it coming from within the depths of their soul.
“Loving Chase wasn’t a choice. Every day, I rubbed the sleep from my eyes, took a deep breath, and shouldered the weight of my love for him.”
Can we talk about the feels of this story? They are EVERYWHERE. Chase’s love for Lilah goes beyond the walls she built around her heart. Beyond the darkness she shrouds herself in. His love penetrates every obstacle. But this is no easy task. Their past has left them shattered. While Chase picked up the pieces and learned to move on half broken, Lilah wants to forget. But their lives hold so many secrets and pain. Eventually all things come to the surface. The author is truly a literary genius. The way she weaves together all the lives of the families within the story is brilliant. She crafts a story where she allows you get lost in the lives of her characters. She easily breathes life into them with her words and her exquisite prose.
“You want to be my hero. I’m the sad, broken girl you grew up with, and you want to swoop in and save the day. I don’t even think you realize you’re doing it.”
Chasing Spring is so much more than what the synopsis says. It’s deeper. It means more. This so much more different than anything you’ve read. Lilah and Chase have been through so much for people their ages. Their lives ripped apart because of the choices of others. Because of secrets. And they are left to pick up the pieces. To LIVE. While Lilah didn’t want to be saved, Chase did more than that. He loved.
I am a lover of books, chocolate, reality TV, black labs, and cold weather. Seriously, if I had it my way, I would be curled up on the couch with all of those things... everyday.
I live in Texas where I spend my free time writing and reading. My favorite authors include Mindy Kaling & Jonathan Safran Foer. I'm a comedy geek and love all things "funny". Women like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Mindy Kaling are definitely the biggest inspirations for my writing, though I think my work tends to skew a bit smuttier than theirs.
