*I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review*
Call me sadistic but titles like this book draw me in. Sometimes you are in the mood for a gut wrenching, heart breaking book that puts you back together again. With Broken, I definitely found elements of that. We meet Leila a truly lost and broken girl, she has never fully recovered from breaking up with the love of her life four years earlier. To numb the pain, Leila uses her own coping mechanisms; lots of one night stands and lots of booze in equal measure. Leila continues merely to exist, that is until a chance meeting at a wedding brings Garrett, the aforementioned love of her life, crashing back into her world.
I really liked this story, there was plenty of emotion and I really felt both Leila and Garrett’s pain. When they dated the first time Leila was only 16 and Garrett 19 and they dealt with some pretty huge issues so neither could be blamed for their actions as most adults couldn’t deal with what they went through. When they collide four years later, their connection and chemistry is undeniable.
I would say this story was pretty angst-less and that is such a contradiction considering the book dealt with issues such as alcohol, depression and drug use as well as many others. But I feel these issues or the couple’s problems were resolved quickly and it became a really sweet read. Just over halfway through the story everything was going well and my stomach was in knots as I thought something else was to come as this never happens to couples in these stories. I was so glad I was proved incorrect and it was a welcome change for a book couple to stay together minus some drama and work through their issues.
It was also refreshing that Leila wasn’t the innocent girl pining for her love and Garrett was the player while they were apart. In was in fact the complete opposite. Garrett couldn’t be with anyone else and to curb her pain Leila sought company in anyone that was willing. It was a great job of the author that she could convey Leila as someone who slept around, yet not once did I hate her, I felt her pain and understood why she chose the numbness. I’m just glad she finally sought help.
Now this book was hot yes it was. If you are partial to reading a hot, steamy scene then this book is for you. I loved Leila and Garrett together and when Leila was sending Garrett some ‘pictures’ his reaction made me laugh out loud he was such a typical guy! I loved him.
This book left me feeling the warm and fuzzies and I liked the positive message it conveyed; it is never too late for love and there are some couples who are just meant to be. No matter what mistakes you may make in life, everyone deserves a second chance.
My favourite quote from Leila sums it up perfectly; “I cannot change the decisions that I have made in the past, but I can learn from them and make the most of the life that I am living now.”
I am glad I discovered this book and author Christa Cervone, I will definitely be keeping watch for her next project.
