"I want you bare to me, my little ghost. I don't know all your secrets and you know none of mine, but I don't want to wear masks with you right now. I want to see all of you."
*I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.*
Façade has been on top of my TBR list for so long, Charade stayed with me long after I read it and Nyrae Dawn fast became one of my favourite authors, so to say I stalked err.. followed Façade's road to completion is putting it mildly :) I knew Adrian was going to be a broken soul, that was a guarantee, what I didn't know was the depth of his despair, and oh, how that broken boy got to me! Façade is a heartbreaking yet heart warming read and one I definitely recommend to all lovers of New Adult romance, and just romance fans in general.
We were first introduced to Adrian in book one, Charade (this is also a must read) we didn't know much about Adrian, he partied a lot and was high constantly. However he was a loyal friend to Colt. I knew there was much more to Adrian and I'm so pleased he got his time to shine.
Adrian chases away the memory of his past by remaining stoned, surrounded by women and meaningless friends. The noisier the better for him as he constantly needs to drown out the sound of his haunted thoughts. He up and left his sister Angel, the only family he had left. He felt he had wronged her and running away was all that he could do. So Adrian hides behind his mask, not letting anyone see the real him, that is until Delaney comes along and without Adrian being conscious of it, he slowly lets Delaney see him for who he really is.
Delaney wears her own mask, she is the girl trying to hold it all together, she had no idea why her family fell apart and then the unthinkable happened and too much damage was done that their lives were truly irreparable. Laney feels guilty for her father's actions so she takes it upon herself to repent for them. Little does she know by meeting Adrian she has the power to save his life but she also holds the power to crush his heart first. Like Tiny Dancer in the book before, we now have a Little Ghost, I thought this nickname was so cute, and perfectly suited to Laney and the secrets that haunted her own eyes.
This New Adult book had a lot of heart, sure there were smexy times but each instance was well placed and so meaningful. I adored the connection between Delaney and Adrian, their first make out session in the car was HOT! And then the night in the hotel? It was oh so tender. They shared some beautiful moments. I loved that Adrian was different, he wasn't your reformed bad boy, a player or a demanding billionaire. He was unique and his writing set him apart. It was perfect for his hidden personality. His words, thoughts and poems caused me many a tear but in a good way of course. I loved this element of the story. This poem to Laney stood out for me;
My little ghost,
Live inside me,
And scare away my sins
Until there's nothing left.
There were many things I liked about Nyrae's writing in this book, aside from the fact it was paced to perfection, included flashbacks and the writing consumed you. What I liked the most was the fact we knew Adrian and Laney's secrets from very early on, I can sometimes find it frustrating in a book if the secret is alluded to throughout the whole book and we are left hanging to the very end. So I was at ease with the fact we knew the terrible secrets each of these characters bore, the angst came from the anticipation of it all flowing over and I knew that was going to happen any minute, so even though I was repeatedly willing Laney to tell Adrian from around 20%, it kept me reading that bit quicker for the big reveal.
The other aspect I loved was that Nyrae remained true to Adrian, he was a realistic character, he had made fun of Colt often enough to say how much he had changed for his girlfriend Chey so I did think it would be all too easy for Adrian's character to change immediately after the truth came out with Laney. So even though my heart was breaking for both Adrian and Laney, I felt the aftermath of "the reveal" was handled realistically. Yes it hurt my heart to witness Adrian crumbling but it was also very much needed for him to find himself and figure out the best way to move forward.
Ugly tears were expected with this book, but to my surprise I was able to hold of until the 80% mark and then I think I struggled to read anything in front of me for the remaining 20%. But it was oh so GOOD!! It was easy to assume we knew it all them BAM! A surprise revelation was thrown at us. It took the story to another dimension and I thought this was genius on Nyrae's part, I didn't see Adrian's role in it coming at all. I had guessed from chapter one Angel was not who she was assumed to be by the way it was worded but I was caught off guard with Adrian's confession and I love when a book can surprise me like that.
Once again I loved being in this world and the characters that come with it. It was great to see Colt and Chey again, I fell so hard for Adrian and I couldn't help but love Delaney. From the moment Maddox (Delaney's brother) appeared I wanted to know more about him so to say I can't wait for his book is an understatement.
I love the Games series and I hope you take a chance and discover it for yourself, grab some tissues, this book, a bar of chocolate and discover the beautiful broken boy that is Adrian Westfall.
"Adrian pulls away. I want to knot my hands in his shirt and tug him back to me. Tell him everything and see if it chases our ghosts away."
"Funny how I don't want her to retreat, how I want to be inside her and know everything that lives there, though I know there's so much of me she'll never see. So much I'll never show."
"You know if you go with me, there will be no escaping me anymore? That I'll make you mine?" ~Adrian
"It's like she has her heart in her hand and it's broken. She's holding it out and showing me all the little pieces. Or maybe it's my heart."
"She knows my words, which are a part of my soul, a part I've never willingly let anyone else see, yet I show them to her. I write them for her. She knows those parts of me-the only parts of me that aren't a lie."
"Show me those ghosts in your eyes and I'll try to kiss them away. Let me bare my scars to you and feel your lips on them." ~Adrian
"She's the rapid pulse in my neck and the welcomed ache in my chest and I want to talk to her and make love to her until there's nothing else but us."
"You helped me stop bleeding. You made my heart beat when I thought it was gone. All those things you said I do for you? They're nothing compared to what you do for me." ~Adrian
