Heart Breaths was an emotional new adult novel about learning to deal with loss and discovering love again.
Maddie needed a fresh start, after one devastating blow too many, she packed up and got on the road until her heart told her to stop. Maddie arrives in a small coastal town and after a rather creepy start with the motel owner she lands herself a job and new apartment.
Maddie is beginning to make friends, although she is reluctant to share her past with anyone. Someone who catches her eye is Noie, a cute little girl with a sexy single dad. Maddie is in no state to open her heart again but with Noie and Gabe’s help, Maddie learns to open up and let love in.
This was my first book by K.K. Hendin and I found it to be an easy read. I felt Maddie’s pain, she had been through so much at such a young age and I could understand her reluctance to lean on anyone.
“Why do you keep leaving?” he asked, looking a little frustrated… He didn’t understand. He couldn’t possibly. “Because nobody ever stays,” I answered. “So I’d rather be the one to leave.”
Gabe wasn’t without his own troubles, his main focus was Noie and even though he felt something building between himself and Maddie, he was reluctant to take that leap. I liked that the relationship was slow building between them, it felt more believable after everything they had been through. The friendship they developed was really sweet. Maddie’s past still haunted her and she needed a friend like Gabe.
“Sometimes, I wished that all I had left was a carving on a fence post. Instead I had the scars of my mistakes, and nightmares that haunted me while I was awake.”
I did think the conflict didn’t equate to the storyline, I was expecting it to be more substantial but I think with everything Gabe and Maddie had been through they couldn’t take anything more.
I did like the spiritual element of the book. I think it comes down to individual preference and what your own beliefs are. I would like to think there is something after this life for us, so I didn’t mind the scenes with Noie and what she shared. I thought it was comforting for Maddie in a way.
Heart Breaths was an enjoyable read, I found both characters to be likeable and I liked K.K.’s writing style. I would definitely read more of her future work. If I could change one thing about the book, it would be the ending. It was so abrupt! I am an epilogue junkie and I needed more for Gabe and Maddie, had we got a few extra pages I thought it would have been great.
If you like emotional stories about second chances then you must check out Heart Breaths today.
KK Hendin's real life ambition is to become a pink fluffy unicorn who dances with rainbows. But the schooling for that is all sorts of complicated, so until that gets sorted out, she'll just write. Preferably things with angst and love. And things that require chocolate.
She's the author of NA contemporaries HEART BREATHS, ONLY THE GOOD DIE YOUNG, and the TWELVE BEATS IN A BAR series (COME BACK TO TEXAS debuts August 18th). She spends way too much time on Twitter, and rambles on occasion over at www.kkhendinwrites.blogspot.com.
