“I adore Rule. I think it’s genetically impossible not to be kind of in love with him when you come equipped with a vagina.”
*I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.*
Well what is there to say about Rule? I had heard a lot about this tattooed bad boy therefore I was desperate to read about him. However sometimes I think you build up a picture in your head and your expectations are set..high.
Rule Archer was the typical misunderstood bad boy, his family life was fractured and the death of his identical twin left Rule devastated to say the least and Rule was trying to fill a shadow that didn’t fit. Rule’s family never dealt with the death of Remy, Rule’s mum blamed him for the death of his brother, his dad was trying to keep the peace and Rule’s older brother Rome enlisted in the army to trade one war zone for another.
The only one in Rule’s camp was Remy’s best friend Shaw, she was close to the Archer’s after Remy befriended her in high school, everyone assumed their close friendship was more than platonic but it had never been as Shaw was madly in love with Rule and it was plain to see for everyone except Rule himself.
So this was your typical good girl falls for bad boy story, although Rule wasn’t the one to corrupt Shaw and lure her in. Shaw knew very well what she was in for. She had seen Rule at his best and worst, Shaw even acted as a buffer to rid him of his many one night stands the morning after. Even though it hurt Shaw to the core she helped him regardless as she knew he was a great guy underneath and love him unconditionally.
Rule had never seen Shaw in any way other than his late brother’s girl and as the annoying pest that dragged him to uncomfortable family brunch every Sunday. That all change the night of Shaw’s 20th birthday when she got drunk and took what she wanted from Rule. Rule being a red blooded male wasn’t strong enough to resist and the next morning he was left confused but most of all surprised that he wanted more than one night with Shaw.
The plot was very typical and I think I was expecting more, sure I felt for Rule and his family, they had a lot of demons and instead of working through it they blamed each other and the family was at breaking point. Shaw had her own demons to face in the form of a persistent ex boyfriend and I loved when Rule when all Alpha male and protected her.
Sure I am one for a hot tattooed guy and Rule had piercings to match (in places you wouldn’t automatically think of ;)) but for me he didn’t capture my heart. I was expecting the steamy scenes to be hotter (especially with him being a bad boy) and for me the book felt long with some unnecessary drama. There was a lot going on with Rule’s family and Shaw’s ex so for more to be added on top of that for the couple, I felt was stretching it.
This was my first book by Jay Crownover, I must admit I wan’t engrossed in the story and could easily have sat it down and picked it up at a later date. However, I did like the supporting characters and was really interested in Rule’s work and his tattoo parlour. I really liked Rome and he has a story to tell so I am looking forward to getting inside his head.
If you live for tattooed bad boys and a good romance with angst thrown in then you will love Rule, so get it today :)
I’m supposed to share interesting details about myself so that my readers get to know me so here we go in no particular order: I’m an natural redhead even though I haven’t seen my real hair color in years, I’m a big fan of tattoos and have a half sleeve on either arm and various other pieces all over the place, I’ve been in the bar industry since I was in college and it has always offered interesting insight into how men and women interact with each other, I have 3 dogs that are all crazy, I live in Colorado and love the snow, I love music and in all reality wish I could be a rock star not a writer or a bartender but I have zero talent so there is that.
I love to write, love to read and all I’m interested in is a good story with interesting characters that make the reader feel something.
