***I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ***
When I started this book, I don’t think I had even got to 2% before I tweeted the author with a quote that had made me laugh and to say ‘I think I’m going to like your book.’ I just could not believe the things that were coming out of Pax Tate mouth, he certainly made me laugh and as much as he was an asshole, by the end of chapter one, I loved him I knew I was going to be a fan.
If You Stay is Pax Tate’s story. Pax is a messed, his mother died when he was younger, and for some reason he has chosen to suppress those memories, he doesn’t have much of a relationship with his father. He is using drugs and alcohol as a way to cope with his past, and a way to block out his nightmares, his emotions of fear and doubt that he has about himself. He is on a path of self-destruction until one near fateful night he meets Mila Hill.
"For the first time in a long time, I cared about something other than myself."~ Pax
I really liked Pax and to honest, he actually wasn’t as much of an asshole as I thought he was going to be. He was a troubled soul, with a heart. Meeting Mila Pax soon realizes has a choice to make does he want to continue on a road of self-destruction or does he make a change for the better.
“Something about you makes me think that I can be better, maybe even get my shit straight. I haven’t felt that way in a long time. ” ~ Pax
Mila Hill was a lovely character; having lost both of her parents a few years before, Mila is guarded with her feelings. Her only family is her sister Madison, and she may be a little protective, but her heart is in the right place and I liked her. Despite her own initial concerns, what she knows about Pax, and the circumstances around their first meeting, Mila is drawn to Pax.
“I can’t let you break my heart. I don’t have much of it left.” ~Mila
“You’ve been hurt in life, Mila. I know that. And I swear to you, on everything that is sacred to me, that I will try not to hurt you, too.”~ Pax
I loved Mila and Pax’ s relationship, which wasn’t always an easy one, but it was great to see how their journey progress and how they both helped each other. They have both suffered similar losses, and I think that is what connects them, even though both deal with it in very different ways. Mila and Pax definitely have chemistry and are hot together; I love some of those sexy scenes, the naked painting was one of my favorites ;)
"He's gorgeous, and flawed and sexy. And I have no idea what I'm getting into." ~ Mia
“The air between us practically crackles with energy as we stare at each other”~ Pax
Overall, good book with a great storyline, that had me emotionally involved from the start. It's told from both Pax and Mila’s point of view which I always love as it allowed me to connect with the characters more to understand their fears, emotions, and feeling. This certainly happened when I read the reason behind Pax’s mother’s death, and my heart when out to him.
I will highly recommend you read this one if you are looking for a good love story. I liked Courtney Cole writing style, the story flowed really well, and it didn’t take me long to read. I loved Courtney’s author’s notes at the end of the book, I was interesting to read the reason behind different parts of the story.
I’m off to read my Arc of If You Leave….. Madison’ Story.
Stay with me gets 4 stars from me.
One last quote: Love Never Fails...
Courtney Cole is a novelist who would eat mythology for breakfast if she could. She has a degree in Business, but has since discovered that corporate America is not nearly as fun to live in as fictional worlds. She loves chocolate and roller coasters and hates waiting and rude people.
Courtney lives in quiet suburbia, close to Lake Michigan, with her real-life Prince Charming, her ornery kids (there is a small chance that they get their orneriness from their mother) and a small domestic zoo.
