Dirty Secret is book one of a fun new series from Emma Hart. As always, it features a couple who like to trade insults and work each other into a frenzy which either results in slamming of doors or wrestling with bed sheets.
“Fast and furious, driven by our anger and frustration. From our kiss to our touch to his movements inside me, it’s unrelenting. It’s painful and soothing, chilling and thrilling. It’s a dream and memory mixed into the past catching up with the present.”
Conner Burke returns to his hometown and discovers the girl who broke his heart is back but this time she isn’t alone. Conner’s life changes tenfold and he welcomes it with open arms, he’s just got to work out how to keep the girl this time.
“I do hate you,” he growls, releasing me fully. “I hate you because you’re still fucking mine, and I don’t want you to be.”
Sofie Callahan knows it’s time to face the music. She can no longer deprive her daughter of her dad and vice versa. Sofie knows exposing her secret will be hard; she just didn’t expect resisting Conner Burke to be even harder.
“His lips, against mine. They’re hot, soft, smooth. Gliding over my mouth, probing, pressing, pleading. Desperate, angry, sad, needing. They’re everything, every sensation, every feeling, just everything.”
Dirty Secret is a quick easy read, those who are familiar with Emma Hart’s writing will know it’s easy to get lost in her stories and enjoy the world she creates. I did like getting to know Dirty B, and the many siblings and family relationships gave the book a hearty feel.
Conner was a nice guy, a refreshing change to the Alpha book boyfriends out there, and it was clear he’d always put his family first. Just one of many reasons that made him swoon worthy.
I did find it harder to connect with Sofie, but then I think with her being so guarded this did inhibit things. But with that being said, I couldn’t help but want to turn each page that little bit faster, waiting for the truth to come spilling out.
I think secret love child storylines are always a risk, if you don’t take to the heroine then no matter what happens as the story progresses, it can all be in vain. I felt Sofie’s guilt, I did believe she felt remorse for making the wrong decision and walking away. If her reasons were stronger I could have empathised with her but as it was, I didn’t really feel for her one way or the other. Thankfully, good guy Conner and sweet Mila made up for Sofie’s downfall.
Even though I felt the book could have done with a greater climax, it was a quick, flirty read and fans of sexy romance and low angst will really love this one. Sometimes you just need to pick up a good book and enjoy a couple without having to worry about unnecessary drama getting in the way. If that sounds like your kind of story, then Dirty Secret is for you.
By day, New York Times and USA Today bestselling New Adult author Emma Hart dons a cape and calls herself Super Mum to two beautiful little monsters. By night, she drops the cape, pours a glass of whatever she fancies - usually wine - and writes books.
Emma is working on Top Secret projects she will share with her followers and fans at every available opportunity. Naturally, all Top Secret projects involve a dashingly hot guy who likes to forget to wear a shirt, a sprinkling (or several) of hold-onto-your-panties hot scenes, and a whole lotta love.
She likes to be busy - unless busy involves doing the dishes, but that seems to be when all the ideas come to life.
