After reading the prequel, A Starstruck Kiss, I was unsure how I would like reading more of William and Jess; I was hoping I would fall in love with them both. Even though that didn’t happen, I did fall in like and Stars in Their Eyes was something different from Lauren Blakely’s usual romances.
William and Jess have struck a deal with each other, Jess gives William the scoop on her life as a paparazzo and in return William will sneak Jess into the most sought after wedding of the year. Their attraction to each other makes things a little more complicated not to mention William has less than two months before his visa expires and he will be sent back to England. Add in a blackmail plot and the manipulative schemes of LA’s rich and famous and you have yourself one fun filled romance novel.
I felt William and Jess’ relationship took a back seat, as the lives of the stars were front and centre. I liked both characters and yearned for more scenes when they opened up to each other. Jess was a complex character and one that I liked; I could understand her need for control and admired the great job she did of keeping everything together as she provided for herself and her future.
With everything going on, their romance was slow building and I liked that. Jess wanted to take things at her own pace and that was refreshing. The focus was on the kisses they shared, it was slow foreplay and with William being ever so swoony, it worked a treat.
“Kisses with him were spectacular. Add in his flirty, swoony words, chase them with a touch of naughtiness, and I was quickly sliding down the path to a frazzled brain. Like a marble rattling down a chute, he was poised to knock my carefully controlled life out of orbit.”
Stars in Their Eyes had a different feel to the other books I have read by Lauren Blakely. It had a little bit of mystery, and lots of interesting characters. I think if you are a gossip hound and love the lives of the rich and famous then the parodies of celebrities and shows will work well for you.
This is probably the first book of Lauren’s I’ve felt indifferent about, I enjoyed reading it and wanted to finish but I’m not eager to read on and learn more about the other characters. Perhaps it’s because it’s set in a world that doesn’t capture my interests, or Anaka whom the next book is about didn’t catch my attention, I’m unsure.
What I did like was William’s character; he was a sweet, charming guy. Sometimes you need a book boyfriend who is a good guy, no broken past, addictions or reformed lives. He was a sweetheart; he fell hard for Jess (in the span of a week) and wanted to do right by her. He wanted to stay in America even before he met Jess but she quickly became his main reason. It made a nice change from the other book boyfriends out there. The fact that he had Jess’ best interests at heart scored him big brownie points from me.
I must say, being the epilogue junkie that I am I did feel cheated out of William and Jess’. I was surprised it was in the POV of William’s brother Matthew. Rather than giving us more from William and Jess and their HEA it merely acted as a segue to Matthew’s own book. That’s great for new fans but if like me, you have already read Far Too Tempting, I felt short changed and wanted it to be about the characters I had just invested my time in reading. With that little niggle aside, plenty of characters like Matthew from Lauren’s other books cropped up and it’s always great to see how they are getting on.
Stars in Their Eyes mixed the glamorous lives of the stars with the behind the scenes dealings of the paparazzo. Throw in a sassy chick and a charming British guy and you have yourself a fun new adult read. If you are a fan of Lauren’s work you should check this one out today.
Lauren Blakely writes sexy contemporary romance novels with heat, heart, and humor, and her books have appeared on the New York Times, USA Today, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and iBooks bestseller lists.
