“I shouldn’t have cared. She shouldn’t be able to get under my skin the way she did—I’d told myself I was through with her. Six years. Six fucking years. Not a letter. Not a phone call. Just nothing.”
That pretty much sums up what Ryland feels towards Piper when he sees her again. This girl was his first everything. Their relationship starts out like many of ours have in High School, sweet and primitive and unassuming. Remember those first “in love” moments that meant so much to our young fragile hearts and minds? This story is about how all of those innocent bonds were broken in a heartbeat. A story based on misconstrued notions and outside influences taking a toll on two people who thought they were doing the right thing for each other, when in fact they had no clue what the hell was actually going on.
“I could have denied it. I could have turned and walked away, but she had to know that no matter where she ran off to she would always be… Mine.”
The dynamic between Piper and Ryland is so very complex, yet so sweet. You can sense their anger towards one another and at the same time sense their need to squash it just to feel each other again. It’s been so long since they have been this close and the tension is almost overbearing for the both of them. Elizabeth does a great job of bringing these characters back together without actually bringing them back together! There are so many other factors in this story that make it kind of intense, but that would being ruining the guts of it if I were to tell you. So I won’t!
I can tell you this; there is action, drama, suspense, love, hate, and HOTNESS! I never thought this book would pan out the way it did and I was so pleasantly surprised with how the story cultivated into this amazing tale of forgiveness, trust and hope. By the end I believe all of the characters came full circle in to what they all needed so desperately! I don’t think they even realized what was going on until it happened, that was kind of cool. I give Elizabeth mad props for that. PLUS I kind of fell in love with Hadley, Piper's younger sister. We will be seeing more from her for sure! All in all this was a great read!
“If we’re in it together, we’re in it together.”
When I'm not writing or playing the part of wife and mother, you can find me dancing back-up for Beyonce, singing back-up for Miranda, or sunning myself on the beach with a drink in hand. Here's the thing about being born and raised in a small town—you have a very vivid imagination! Now, I channel it all to create stories where the girl always ends up with the right guy, first kisses are magical, and a happy ending is just that.
