There’s a single defining moment within every skater.
It lasts only a second. Two if you're good.
Three if you’re really good.
It’s the moment you’re in the air, your board somewhere beneath you, and nothing but wind surrounds you.
It’s the feeling of being airborne.

The sixteen-year-old version of me would’ve said it was the greatest feeling in the world.
Then at seventeen, I had my son.
And every single second became a defining moment. Even the ones that consisted of heartbreak when his mother left us.

Seventeen. Single. Dad.
That’s what my life became.
Yet, every day, I managed to find that feeling of being airborne.
Or at least I convinced myself I did.
But I lied—to myself and to everyone around me.
Until she showed up; Tanned skin, raven dark hair, and eyes the color of emeralds.

You know what sucks about being in the air?
Coming down from the high.
Sometimes you land on the board and nail the trick.
Then kick, push, and coast away.
Other times you fall.
You fall hard.
And those are the times when it’s not as easy to get back up, dust off your pads and try again.
Especially when the girl with the emerald eyes becomes your drug...
And you become her poison.

Kick Push by Jay McLean was one of those books that I started reading having preconceived ideas of how expecting the story to go. And the suddenly within the first few chapters I realise this is going to be different and much more that just your normal boy meets girl story. Single dad Joshua Warden’ story wow was emotional at times, and once I started, I couldn’t put it down.

“Sometimes the basic of moments become your most treasured memories”

I’m not going to go into the storyline as it one you need to read only knowing what Jay tell you in the synopsis. What I will tell you is that Kick Push is about second chances, family, sacrifices, friendship, falling in love, trust, and happiness.

“There’s a big difference between being happy and being selfish. Choose to be happy and Fire truck the rest”

It’s not just Josh that will have you reaching for the tissue as he tries to deal with all that come with being a single parent at such a young age. There is the girl with the emerald eyes who has stolen his heart she is an amazing character, and her story is heartbreaking. I love the connection and empathy between these two.

“His touch is safe”

“I’m addicted to her. To every single thing about her. And even though I know It’s bad, it feels so dam good”

The secondary characters added to the story and play an important part of it without taking the focus away from Josh and the girl with the emerald eyes. Okay, well maybe someone did, and that would be Tommy Josh’s son. He was just too cute. Loved Tommy’s relationship with his dad, and many of the other characters.

I loved Jay’s writing is beautiful, and you can feel the passion she has for these characters. If you love, emotional, heartwarming, heartbreaking reads, then this one is for you. Don’t get me wrong yes, it emotional but, Jay still in flicks her great sense of humour that made me smile and laugh to myself and I love that.

Push Kick is a must read that you won’t forget in a hurry, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next.

“I see you Josh”

Chloe has one plan for the future, and one plan only: the road. She’s made a promise to herself: don’t let anyone in, and don’t let anyone love her. She’s learned the hard way what happens if she breaks her rules. So she’s focused on being invisible and waiting until she can set out on the road—her dream of freedom, at least for a little while.

Blake Hunter is a basketball star who has it all—everything about him looks perfect to those on the other side of his protective walls. He can’t let anyone see the shattered pieces behind the flawless facade or else all his hopes and dreams will disappear.

One dark night throws Chloe and Blake together, changing everything for Blake. For Chloe, nothing changes: she has the road, and she’s focused on it. But when the so-called perfect boy starts to notice the invisible girl, they discover that sometimes with love, no one knows where the road may lead.

Where the Road Takes Me is a heartwarming, poignant story about love, friendships, family healing, change, trust, loss, and happiness.

“Sometimes the wrong path can lead us to the right road. And towards the greatest thing that will ever happen to us”

Chloe and Blake’s story took me by surprise, and it was an emotional read for me as a certain aspect of the storyline hit a little close to home. I’m obviously not going to say what that was as it would be a big spoiler. Let's just say when I read in that line, the one that gave me a hint of what their story was about I had to put the book down. As my memories came my mind, and I just want to give Chloe a hug. I could understand why she had her walls up, and never let any get too close.

“I knew my future. I knew my fate. And I knew that I had absolutely no control of any of it”

I enjoyed being on Chloe and Blake’s journey and seeing where the road takes not only Chloe but also Blake. These were two characters that I couldn’t help, but like. They were slightly broken in some ways, and they had choices to make. Chloe is independent and feisty she has a plan and is focused on it. Blake is a sweetheart and so protective of Chloe he thought he had a plan, but that all changed the moment he met Chloe. I loved the way their friendship developed and grew into something more it was touching to watch. I loved these two together they had some sweet and moving moments together.

“She brought something out in me that had never existed before. She made me want to be there. She made me want to stay. It was as if she had hands, squeeze me, taken my heart in her hands, squeezed tight, and made it start beating again”

Where the Road Takes Me was a lovely, touching, angsty and funny romance story. It had some great secondary characters that added to the story. I love the way Jay added humor to a story, and not take away the emotional side and essence of the story.  The story pulled me in from the start and kept me there until I swipe that last page after reading it’s bittersweet ending. I love red Letter Days.

“You’re my unexpectedly phenomenal”

I recommend that if you’re a fan of YA/NA romance stories, then you should one click this one today, as I think you would enjoy it.

Chloe lifted her gaze and locked it with mine. She shook her head again and groaned, “Fine.” Then she took off her shirt.

My jaw dropped.

My hands had touched her bare skin, the curve of her hips, and her tiny waist, but I’d seen her body only once, when she was in a bikini, and that had been for only a minute. But that was nothing compared to seeing her like this. Up close. So close her sports bra–covered breasts were just under my nose.

“Blake?” she whispered.

I struggled to take my eyes off her chest, but I finally made it to her face. She had her hair tied up in a messy knot on top of her head, like she often did. But a few strands were stuck on her neck and on her face . . . and a little sheen of sweat covered her arms and her stomach, her chest, her breasts . . .

“Blake,” she repeated, and I trailed my eyes back to hers again.

She pouted before she said, “Give me the ball?”

I shook my head and hid the ball behind my back.

She pouted again. “Please?” she whispered. Then a hint of a  smile broke through.

“Are you trying to seduce me into giving you my ball?”

Teaser Quote

"Because over the years of building walls and living my life one day at a time, I’d learned to accept my fate and never hope for more than what I had. I’d never questioned the way I thought about my life. But Blake—he made me question it. He made me want to change it. To change my outlook. And to change myself. But I couldn’t. And I wouldn’t. Because one day, sooner rather than later, I’d be gone. And I’d leave them all behind.”
