Blog Tour - First Debt (Indebted #2) by Pepper Winters ~ Ava & Adriana's Review, Teasers & Giveaway!!
*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
After reading book one of this series, I was a little hesitant to start this one. I have hundreds of questions in my head: Will Jethro redeem himself? Will I love it or is this series doomed for me? Well, I am so glad that I LOVED it!!!
The biggest issue I had with book one were the main characters. I felt no emotional attachment to either Jethro or Nila, but I was sure Pepper's amazing writing would have made me fall in love with them along the way (She did!!).
Nila is so different from the scared, naive and innocent girl from the first book. She knows her life is pretty much doomed, but she never stops fighting. Page after page she goes toe to toe with Jethro never once backing down. I have started to admire her character and I even look forward to the sexually charged fights between her and Jethro. In the short amount of time she has been at the Hawk residence, she has had an epiphany. She finally sees her life as what it was and she no longer feels the need to please her brother or father. If she will make it out alive, she will do so by her own means.
Jethro, Jethro, Jethro! In this book I finally received what I was looking for in the first one. He is still chilly as ever toward Nila and the whole Debt Inheritance, but now cracks are starting to form in his cool facade. Nila is starting to crack the ice that he has built around himself and time and time again he tries to take a step back from all the feeling she instills in him. We see a new, vulnerable side to Jethro thanks to NIla. I loved being inside Jethro's head and I look forward to read more of his revealing thoughts in the near future. The more intimate scenes between the two were powerful and full of electricity. I hope to see more of those scenes in the future books.
I'm still iffy on Kestrel. I feel like he has some kind of hidden agenda, and whatever it is, I know I will not like it. I actually enjoyed the appearance of other various secondary characters (Yes, even Cut) and I can't wait to see what it is revealed about them. My head is still full of questions and the Debt Inheritance itself is still not making complete sense to me.
Overall, I really really enjoyed this book. So much was revealed while other things are still kept secret that only Ms. Pepper knows about. Once again Pepper Winters ensnared me in her web of words and powerful scenes. I am looking forward to this crazy roller coaster ride!
“One moment I was the Darling of Milan, the next I was a Weaver Whore.”

It is time for the first debt to be paid and Nila has come to realise this is her reality. There is no escape, she will pay back each debt until the very last, which will result in her death. But she has a plan; she just needs Jethro to comply first.
“I didn’t trust Jethro. At all. This was a battle. Every time we touched, licked and eventually fucked, it would be war.”
After a rocky start in Indebted, First Debt worked for me. I seen a side to Jethro that was missing in the first book, cracks in his glacial cage began to appear, namely every time Nila was close. I was invested more in Jethro this time around; he’s just as much a pawn in this game as Nila is. I was on the fence before, but from this moment on, I know I’ll be #TeamJethro.
Nila surprised me as a character, and she’s shown tremendous growth from the beginning of the first book to the end of the second. Long gone is the sheltered, naïve seamstress, and in her place is a worthy adversary for Jethro Hawk. Nila is still mistrusting and rightly so, Kestrel has become her friend but Nila knows everything she believes can be an illusion. She sees her life for what it was, her father and brother weren’t protecting her, they were shielding her and now Nila understands, she needs to be her own saviour and she is determined to be so.
“I never admitted I would die for them. I would eat their food, play with their toys, and fuck their oldest son, but I wouldn’t die. If the Weaver Wailer collar couldn’t come off until my death, I planned to wear it until I died in my sleep at a very old age.”
Nila has managed to do the one thing Jethro never imagined; she has gotten under his skin. I loved the verbal sparring sessions between them, the give and take of power and when they both finally gave in. Not only were they some of the hottest scenes I’ve read but they were some of the most raw and exposing. I loved the last 20% of this story and I hope to see more of these stripped back moments between Nila and Jethro.
“If sex with you is like that every time, I have a horrible feeling we’ll end up fucking each other into an early grave.”
There are so many, many unanswered questions that are adding to the mystery surrounding Nila’s situation and the debts to be repaid. I want to know what Kestrel’s game is, I don’t trust Cut at all and worry that he’ll be Jethro and Nila’s biggest threat, I wonder if Vaughn and Tex will make an appearance and I have all these theories swirling around in my head, I must admit, it makes me desperate for the next instalment. Even though the history of the debt still remains dubious for me, and I struggle to suspend my disbelief, I’m now attached to both Jethro and Nila’s plight that I must read on for them alone.
“You’ve destroyed me, Nila. And now it’s my job to make sure they don’t destroy you, too.”
As always, Pepper Winter’s writing is sensational. I would love to spend a day in her head; her prose is genius and perfect in its delivery. I felt every emotion between Nila and Jethro. I felt emotionally drained after reading; I felt their mental and physical duels and never before have I read such a passionate kissing scene. It was supercharged with hatred and eroticism at the same time. Hats off to Ms Winters for being a literary Queen.
If you fell for Jethro from the moment you met him you will combust upon reading this book. If, like myself, you weren’t so sure, I guarantee your mind will be made up after this one. Revelations were made at the end, and I can’t wait to discover how it will affect the power play. This series is one not to miss.

Pepper Winters wears many roles. Some of them include writer, reader, sometimes wife. She loves dark, taboo stories that twist with your head. The more tortured the hero, the better, and she constantly thinks up ways to break and fix her characters. Oh, and sex... her books have sex.
She loves to travel and has an amazing, fabulous hubby who puts up with her love affair with her book boyfriends.
