Emil isn’t your usual adoring leading man.
He’s the monster anti-hero.
Aishe isn’t your classic protagonist.
She’s the temptress anti-heroine.
This isn’t your typical romance.
It’s a horror anti-love story.
This isn’t the traditional novel where the sweet, innocent girl finds her prince charming and they live happily-ever-after. If that’s what you’re looking for, look somewhere else.
Because in this story, no one gets out unscathed.
Aishe is running. Running from the burn of a love she knows will consume her.
Running from a soul mate she’s never even met.
If only she hadn’t been hired as a merch girl for the hottest indie band on earth.
If only she’d never laid eyes on its front man, Emil—intense, sexy, and so unlike the men of her culture.
If only she hadn’t fallen onto his lips, then into his bed.
If only her flame hadn’t exploded into a full-on forest fire.
If only Emil’s heart didn’t belong to someone else.
Emil is running. Running from a broken heart.
Running from who he was with her.
If only Zoe hadn’t left.
If only Aishe hadn’t been right there.
If only she hadn’t been so damn gorgeous—insistent—different.
If only he could control himself around her.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
With every book she releases, the author blows me away with her versatile and unconventional writing style and stories. And… In The Absence Of You? Well, it doesn’t follow the rules.
The love fire.
I. Am. Inflicted.”
Aishe is hired to be a merchandise girl for a super popular indie band, Clown Irruption. She is running from her past and love. Not willing to face it, she finds something in the front man of the band, Emil. But even Aishe should know that with her ancestry, you can’t escape what’s meant to be. Oh Emil. I want to throw things at you as much as I want to love on you. This book was such a ride! It was frustrating, yet exhilarating. The author effortlessly draws you in with this unique storyline. Aishe yearns for Emil. On a level that so many of us will never understand. But how can she fall someone who has a heart that belongs to someone else?
“Emil’s love would not crush me if I owned it, because when ice hits hot water, does it not turn lukewarm?”
There is so much push and pull in this book. The angst and sexual chemistry are off the charts. But there is pain. Darkness. Something Emil and Aishe share and understand. They both want to love, but love has caused them heartache and despair. Aishe tries to be there for him. But Emil is fighting demons that no one can see. She is drawn to him as she is convinced that her love fire for him can fix it all. As layers of this story develops, you will not be able to guess what's to come.
“Why do you still care so much, Emil?”
“Because there’s nothing about her I can forget.”
As the synopsis states, Emil is THE anti-hero. But despite everything, you will love him. He is still trying to deal with the aftermath of his heart being shattered into a million pieces. The drinking, the partying, the girls? It’s all to numb what he feels inside. And while this seems like unattractive behavior, you as the reader are given the opportunity to truly get and understand his actions. To understand just how big his heart is. How he loves deeply to the point of consumption.
“What I can’t provided in emotions, I’ll give her in spades with my body. I’ll love her body with mine. It’s good for us to do this. I’ll give her reassurance. She’ll give me respite.”
The writing is mesmerizing. Addicting. You are absolutely immersed in the depths of the most beautiful, yet tragic and heartbreakingly love song made up of the words in this book. One that’s full of hope as much as hopelessness. The author is a nonconformist in her crafting of this masterful and spellbinding story. She takes chances. She pushes and challenges you. The characters are raw. Nothing is held back. The author always remains true to her characters. She is extremely talented with her character development in that she never changes them to adjust to a expected storyline. She doesn’t do the expected. It’s easily seen that her characters are ingrained in her as she gives her readers a story that is difficult, but one that is necessary to be heard. Again, I am just astounded with her talent to illicit such strong and differing emotions with just her words.
“What if it had hit my heart before she came back for it?”
In The Absence Of You is THE book you never see coming. The storyline is unlike anything you will ever read. But it will consume you and your thoughts. This story hurts, yet it is heartbreakingly beautiful. This intense story will stay with me for a long time to come.
Between studies, teaching, and advising, Sunniva has spent her entire adult life in a college environment. Most of her novels are new adult romance geared toward smart, passionate readers with a love for eclectic language and engaging their brain as well as their heart while reading.
Born in the Land of the Midnight Sun, the author spent her early twenties making the world her playground. Southern Europe: Spain, Italy, Greece--Argentina: Buenos Aires, in particular. The United States finally kept her interest, and after half a decade in Los Angeles, she now lounges in the beautiful city of Savannah.
Sometimes, Sunniva writes with a paranormal twist (Shattering Halos, Stargazer, and Cat Love). At other times, it's contemporary (Pandora Wild Child, Leon's Way, Adrenaline Crush, Walking Heartbreak, and Dodging Trains, coming in late March 2016).
This author is the happiest when her characters let their emotions run off with them, shaping her stories in ways she never foresaw. She loves bad-boys and good-boys run amok, and like in real life, her goal is to keep the reader on her toes until the end of each story.
