Hired by a stranger to write his life story, Beth Lambert arrives at a seemingly abandoned house in the hills near her hometown. She knows the rumors, she knows it is dangerous and unwise. But she needs the money. And she needs to prove that it isn’t a mistake to think she can make a career out of a dream.
Inside the house of emptiness and coldness, she finds a man with curt words and haunted eyes. He is eccentric, odd. Brutish, even. He scares her, and he intrigues her. When she learns who he is, she wants to run. But there is the money, and there is the dream, and eventually, there is simply Harrison Caldwell. The haunted man with the black, ugly truth.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
How do I even begin to discuss this book?! The love is so deep. So profound. This story gave me life. It moved me. And seriously one of the most beautiful, loving, and thought provoking stories I’ve ever read.
“The truth was more likely to be whispered than shouted.”
Harrison Caldwell hires Beth Lambert to write his life story. Beth is a stranger and has no idea why she has been sought out to write this story, but she is excited to follow through as writing is her passion. She becomes hesitant the moment she meets the town recluse. Why did he choose her? She soon learns that she has no idea who he is, and that fact right there is why Harrison is drawn to her and tasks her with writing his story. Neither one knows that the path of their lives is about to be forever changed.
“What was it like to meet his demons and know they could one day slay him?”
Harrison is cold. He lives his life alone. He has shut out the world. Despite this, Beth finds herself wanting to know more about this man. His impenetrable walls keep her from knowing him, but little by little he allows his personality to shine through. She begins to represent everything he said he should never yearn for. Living. And although Beth has been living, Harrison makes it known that she has never been truly loved. Not until she found her way into his heart.
“He was all the stars, and all the galaxies, and everything beyond; held in the hand of all the words. Secret rooms, unknown floors, whispered passages. Beth wanted to discover them all.”
Beth learns Harrison’s identity and is stunned that he lives a life of solitude. But Harrison has his reasons. Everyone else knows his secret. Except Beth. And when his confession should make her run, she runs straight into the depths of his heart and soul. Her love for him shatters everything. Her love only sees him.
“He was breathtaking, a half man made whole in the storm of the song.”
The fall. It has to be the most endearing, beautiful, and moving part of this book. They fall effortlessly. Once the walls crumble. Harrison is no longer shrouded in darkness. His beautiful soul comes to light. Is there anything that love cannot overcome? This book attests to this truth. Their love transcends and overwhelms. Their love endures all things. It bears the heaviest truths. Their love is simply a musical masterpiece.
“You say I inspire you, but you don’t know that you do the same for me.”
This is only my second book by this author, and she has easily solidified that her words do nothing but give me life. Her words devastate and inspire at the same time. Her words are moving, brilliant, and deep. There is not a lot of sexy or innuendos in this book. It’s slowly paced. But its beautiful in the development. The author is uniquely talented as she allows her readers to get absolutely lost in her words.
“Maybe he had to break to see that he could let her in through the cracks. Beth could fill the holes. She could patch him up with her light.”
Steady As The Snow Falls is a powerful and inspiring read. The author is raw in not only the delivery of the story, but the emotions of her characters. The love in this story pushes boundaries and challenges you. Just how much can love overcome? This story is truly a testimony to just how deeply you can love someone despite their circumstances. Despite the consequences of that love. A selfless love. A real love.
“Why would you choose this, choose me?”
“You make me want to dance.”
