Can the ending of one dream lead to the beginning of a new one?
Will Gartner made a lot of mistakes in the past, but he finally has his life together. Leaving his reckless teenage years behind, he’s recently graduated from college and is all set to move from Las Vegas to New York to start a prestigious new job. But when an unexpected guest shows up at his farewell party, all Will’s dreams are smashed to pieces. Suddenly, he’s taking a crash course in how to be a father to the five-year-old daughter he never knew existed.
Will changes direction and heads to Harmony Creek, Ohio, and the only person who’s ever really been there for him, his brother Chase. Chase saved Will in the past, but will he rescue him yet again? Some lessons—like fatherhood—can only be learned by doing. Is Will up to the challenge?
And where does Emma Metzger fit into Will’s suddenly upside-down world? Emma knows all about his troubled past and sees his hesitation to commit to his new daughter. How can she commit her heart to a man who doesn’t know what the word means?
Chase always told Will “Follow your heart. Always try to be a good man.” But will following his heart be enough for his daughter, and for Emma?
The After of Us is a story about letting go of old dreams, and, in the process, discovering what you really needed to make you happy was right there in front of you all along.
The After of Us is a spin-off of the Judge Me Not series and a standalone novel.
New Adult Romance/Coming of Age Romance
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Will Gartner has been a favorite of mine since I met him in his brother’s series. He’s always been a little trouble with a lot of soul. A lot of heart. And his book? It was so much more than I ever thought it could be.
“With you in my life, I’m finally the man I’ve always wanted to be.”
Will has finally defied the odds from his youthful (and troublesome) past. He has grown up and graduated college. His life is on a fast track to success with an amazing job opportunity in New York. He is literally hours from starting his life post- college when his past comes back and puts everything to a halt. A 5 year old daughter, he knew nothing about is left in his care. In true fashion what does Will do? He turns to his big brother, Chase. He learns that sometimes we are meant to be in the very places we try to run from.
“It’s true, Emma does save me. She grounds me, keeps me on course.”
Totally at a loss, Will decides to stay with Chase for awhile to figure out what exactly should be his next move. He is so drawn to his daughter, Lily, but he is truly at some crossroads on the path he should take. He has dreams. Big ones. And he knows abandoning the one person that depends on him is not an option. The struggle between pursing his dream and caring for his daughter becomes his biggest challenge yet. But when he meets Emma Metzger, he finds out that letting go can be the best thing that has ever happened to him.
“My love for Emma is deep. It’s something undeniable in my soul.”
Will and Emma met years ago, and there was a spark between them. Years later, the moment they see each other again, this spark has been set ablaze. You feel it coming off of the pages. Their past so unfinished, so many what ifs. Their reunion had my heart racing as you felt them both come alive in the presence of each other. They fell easily. Softly. Their love can only be described as a magical awakening. Neither of them realized just how much they were missing a part of their souls.
“You’re making me fall for you, Emma Metzger.”
“Good. Because I’ve already fallen for you, Will Gartner.”
Lily is the breath of fresh air Will didn’t know he needed. She is his strength, his heart. His dreams. Even his fears. His love for his child is overwhelming. Endearing. He is a better person because of his love for Lily. He never knew he could love this deeply until her. And this is what made it so easy to fall for Emma. She knew the type of father he could be. She brought out the best in him. She showed him just how powerful love truky is. How love overcomes. It saves. In all things, choose love.
“Love makes us all desperate in one way or another. It’s an unavoidable consequence of placing your fragile heart in another’s hands.”
The writing was mesmerizing. I found it hard to put down as the author masterfully executed a story that keeps the reader engaged the entire time. The After Of Us is a thought provoking story about love always ending up where it belongs. Will thought his future was set. But a 5 year old who quickly became the love of his life changed everything. She shifted his world. And a woman who deeply loved him forever changed his heart. Emma taught Will that he should trust in love, and everything would fall in place. Never stop running from the very thing that is meant to save you. What an amazing spin off to this series. Will Gartner now owns a piece of my heart.
