*I received an e-ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review
I haven't had the pleasure of reading an Ilona Andrews' book before Clean Sweep, but her Kate Daniels series has been highly recommended to me so after reading the synopsis, I knew I had to read it.
I loved Dina, the innkeeper. When the neighborhood dogs start getting killed, Dina takes matters into her own hands and decides to hunt down the mysterious killer. I thought Dina was pretty badass. With the help of her super cool broom, her awesome magical house and her adorable Shih Tzu, Dina is ready to face the monster. She doesn't back down and just goes for it. She also doesn't let the men dictate her actions and stands up to them on more than one occasion.
I really liked the secondary characters like Sean and Arland. They brought a little bit of humor and entertaining dialogue. They interactions between them and Dina were one of my favorite parts of this book. I can't wait see more of Sean in the next book and learn more about him and Arland since they still remain a little bit of a mystery to me.
This story turned out into so much more than what I was expecting. As the story progresses, we're introduced to a whole new world(s) filled with interesting, and sometimes creepy, characters. This is described so vividly that you can easily visualize it. I also liked that images of some of the characters were incorporated into the book which made it a lot easier picture them throughout the book. There is also a little bit of romance thrown in, but it didn't take away from the story- which I loved.
Overall, I really liked the characters and the interactions with each other as well as the the world-building in this book. I found out that this was a serial published on the author's website, so I'll be keeping an eye out and see if the same will be done for book two. I will be definitely reading more from Ilona Andrews and read the sequel which is releasing in 2014.
*I received an ARC of this book from the author, in exchange for my honest review.*
As a huge fan of Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels urban fantasy series, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book. It helped that I had already read and loved the parts of this novel they posted on their blog back when Clean Sweep was a free serial story, so I knew it would be good. I was lucky enough to be given an ARC of Clean Sweep when I saw that they were looking for readers, and am very glad I had the chance to read this story in it’s entirety, in one book.
Dina was the main character. I really liked her, since she was compassionate, resourceful, and very brave. I felt sorry for her because of her parents’ disappearance and her inability to find them, but the fact that she got back on her feet and started her own inn was something that made me admire her even more. I never thought she was annoying, and even when she had weak moments, I fully understood them. I loved that she stood up to people when she had to, and I had a lot of fun following her through this book.
The side characters in this book were mysteries, and mostly remained that way. I have to admit to liking Sean the best, though. He was arrogant, but I could tell that he really came to care about Dina. Plus, it was kind of interesting that Dina had to teach him some things about himself. Arland never grew on me, but I did like that he ended up being loyal, and doing the things that he needed to do. I thought that Sean, Arland, and Dina ended up making an interesting team, even with all of the personality clashes.
The plot of this story was really interesting. It started off with dogs being killed, and Dina wanting to try and stop it from happening. From there, the story turned into an intriguing mystery, with an otherworldly element. As this was a short novel, things happened pretty quickly, but I was definitely satisfied with how the story was told.
Overall, I really liked this book. It was a quick, easy read with a likable heroine and an interesting side cast. The mystery was interesting, and I loved the bits and pieces of world-building that was created in this book. With how this story ended, I am definitely looking forward to the sequel coming in 2014.
Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team.
Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.) Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Oregon with their two children, three dogs and a cat. They have co-authored two series, the bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and romantic urban fantasy of The Edge.
