“It might be a line, but it doesn’t feel like a line, it feels like the truth of one night and this is all I want. A night without lies or lines or pretending.”
I read this novella after the first book and I think it would be of benefit to read this first. We didn’t get Trey and Harley's initial meeting in The Thrill of It, we only got a small recap therefore, I missed the chemistry and wanted to know how it all began.
Trey and Harley are on the precipice of something life changing. They both have sins to atone for and the night before everything changes, fate throws them together and gives them one last night to let go and truly feel for the very first time.
“This is one of those nights that you can’t plan for, but are like magic, and they fall into your life when you most need them.”
“Tomorrow everything changes, but tonight is still mine. And Trey feels like mine too. Like he came into my life tonight for a reason. For more than just a tattoo. For this. For this night to exist suspended and apart from everything else.”
The story follows Trey and Harley over the span of one night, Harley walks into Trey’s tattoo parlour and for the first time she feels a connection with a man that isn’t forced or pre-arranged. For one night, Harley wants to feel like a normal nineteen year old before her life changes.
“This is a defining moment in my life – the line between the past I leave behind, and the new girl that somehow, some way, I have to become.”
Trey is knocked sideways when Harley enters his shop, she isn’t his type, she’s younger than the women he’s used before and too innocent looking but perhaps that’s part of the allure. The connection is undeniable and Trey and Harley may only have a few hours together but Lauren Blakely makes them count. This novella was sexy, sweet and sensual all wrapped up in one.
“I want to reach out to her, to put this night on repeat, to never forget how I feel right now. How it’s more than just physical. There’s some kind of connection between us.”
“Harley,” I say in a low rasp. “If you tell me you want me to kiss you, I will.” She nods once and I thread my hands through her hair as she says, “I want you to kiss me, Trey.”
This was short, sweet and sexy. It hinted at Trey and Harley's secrets, the chemistry bubbled away slowly until it boiled over and at the end. It was bitter sweet when they had to say goodbye, thinking that it would be for the very last time but I was left with a smile on my face as I knew the whole story; the beautiful, emotional roller coaster that is Trey and Harley.
“Sometimes I think things happen for a reason. Like I was meant to come to your shop tonight and get this tattoo. And I think if we’re meant to run into each other again, fate will make it happen.”
The Start of Us is the perfect teaser to the No Regrets series, you will be left wanting more of Trey and Harley, and all three books are well worth a read.
“Then I kiss her, and it’s a kiss that is full of regret and hope at the same time. Or maybe it’s a kiss with no regrets because tonight was everything it should be. One last night, one last chance, one last first kiss before tomorrow.”
