**I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review**
I had the pleasure of getting a good sneak peek of Changing Course while it was still a WIP and absolutely could not wait to get my hands on the final copy. I could tell straight away that this debut novel from Aly Martinez would be something I would love and it definitely did not disappoint. It grabbed my attention and gripped my heart from the very first sentence (actually, what I thought was oh no, I'm in for it!, because I'm a major crybaby and just knew it was coming) and I could tell right from the start that I was in for an extremely emotional ride.
Something else I could tell early on was that Brett was a character that I could fall head over heels for. He's charming and funny, with a heart of gold. The glimpses we get into his and Sarah's early relationship and whirlwind romance are super cute and so sweet. They made for a fun couple and this new author delivered the steam straight away with these two! And the proposal? How freaking cute?! It was so very Brett and Sarah. Unfortunately all love stories don't have a happy ending and a horrible tragedy turns this couple's world upside down and forever changes them both. Jump to four years later, and we're able to see how Brett has coped with the awful hand he's been dealt. He's now rough around the edges and stuck in a rut.
Enter Jesse! She's a cute, flirtatious barista at a local coffee shop that Brett frequents with his best friend Caleb (*sigh* Caleb...) and has a major crush on our now jaded detective. She's fun, she's shy and, if he lets her, she could help Brett realize that he doesn't have to be quite so miserable all the time. She's just the breath of fresh air that he needs. But, of course, it's not smooth sailing for this new couple. There's plenty of drama, blasts from the past, and mixed emotions to keep things interesting and as angsty as we all love. Can Jesse really help Brett move on, or is she just setting herself up for heartbreak?
This book was written in a way that you felt sympathetic to every single character, even the awful ones, which isn't always an easy feat. I fell in love with the main characters, as well as the supporting characters-- Caleb, anyone?! How dreamy. I'm ready for his story, like yesterday. They definitely brought some humor into this emotionally heavy read. This book had lots of surprises and heart-stopping moments, and I shed quite a few tears. Fortunately for us, it's all wrapped up in a beautiful, tearful happily ever after, worthy of these lovable characters. All in all, I think this was a fantastic debut and I'm expecting some pretty great things from this author. I'm looking forward to many more in this series.
I’m a 32 year old wife and stay at home mom to four kids under the age of five, including a set of twins. My life is crazy, which is probably why I drink entirely too much wine. Oh who am I kidding, I had a love affair with wine long before the kids came along. I was born and raised in Savannah Georgia, but we recently moved to Chicago. Let me tell you, this southern girl was not ready for the cold weather up here!
I’m an avid reader, but I haven’t always been that way. A few years ago my sister loaned me her Nook Color, and it changed my life forever. In the span of about two years, I read over 500 books. My newfound love of reading led me to start a book blog with two of my best friends. (Insert shameless plug here: WhiteZinBookends.com). Through WZ Bookends, I've had the opportunity to meet some of the most amazing authors, bloggers, and readers out there. Now that I have taken the leap into writing my own book, they’ve all shown me endless amounts of encouragement and support.
While driving home from Walmart one day in late October, a story embedded itself in my head and would not let go. It spiraled out of control until I finally opened my laptop and started writing. This journey has been a wild ride filled with tears, hand cramps, and tons of laughs. I love company, so follow me at one of the social links below and join me aboard this crazy train!
